  • The Pirates grounded into seven double plays Friday night, including one by David Freese to end the game, as they dropped their second straigh 1-0 decision to the Cubs while seeing their scoreless streak reach 23 1/3 innings.
  • When a pair of helicopters flew over Lambeau Field early in the first quarter of Thursday’s preseason game between the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers, it seemed a little late for the traditional flyover.
  • Mike Tomlin calls them combat catches, which was an appropriate term to describe the two touchdown receptions for Pittsburgh Steelers rookie James Washington on Thursday night.
  • Jordy Mercer has been such a mainstay in the middle of their infield, playing at least 100 games each of the past six seasons, that it was hard to imagine anyone else starting at shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
  • Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi said he doesn’t want to hand wide receiver Taysir Mack a starting job, but he stopped just short of doing that Friday morning.
