Brookville Man Faces Felony Charges for Assaulting State Troopers with Fork

UNION TWP., Pa. (EYT) – A Brookville man is facing felony aggravated assault charges after allegedly assaulting two Pennsylvania state troopers with a fork.

Court documents indicate the Clarion-based State Police filed criminal charges against 47-year-old Steven Dewayne Ruth, of Brookville.

According to a criminal complaint, around 9:19 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15, Troopers Graf and Jones were attempting to make contact with a subject from a prior incident. The victim of the prior incident told police that the subject would be at his friend’s residence on Olean Road in Corsica.

When the troopers arrived at the scene, Steven Dewayne Ruth was on the side porch of his residence.

According to the complaint, the troopers, who were standing in the driveway of the residence, asked Ruth to come over to the driveway. so they could inform him of their investigation.

The complaint states that Ruth, who was intoxicated, was verbally abusive toward the troopers. When they attempted to tell him whey they were there, he spoke over them and demanded to see a search warrant.

At that time, the troopers noticed Ruth had a metal fork in his left hand, and they told him to put the fork down.

According to the complaint, Ruth looked at the fork and then maneuvered it into his hand for a better grip. The complaint states that Ruth then made a motion in preparation for a stabbing motion, and Tpr. Graf forces Ruth to the ground to effect an arrest.

According to the complaint, Ruth resisted the troopers’ attempts at handcuffing him and refused commands to place his hands behind his back.

Ruth was eventually taken into custody and transported to PSP Clarion for processing.

Based on the investigation, Ruth was arraigned at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 16, in Magisterial District Judge Gregory M Bazylak’s office.

He faces the following charges:

– Aggravated Assault, Felony 1
– Simple Assault, Misdemeanor 2
– Resist Arrest/Other Law Enforcement, Misdemeanor 2
– Disorderly Conduct Engage In Fighting, Misdemeanor 3
– Public Drunkenness And Similar Misconduct, Summary

Ruth was lodged in the Jefferson County Jail on $10,000.00 cash bail; however, a surety bond was posted by a professional bondsman on May 17.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 13, with Judge Bazylak presiding.
