In an early-season matchup between neighborhood rivals Clarion and Clarion-Limestone, the visiting Lions closed out the third quarter on a 15-3 run to erase a one-point deficit and pick up a 57-42 win over the Bobcats.

Clarion (0-3, 0-1 KSAC North) grabbed a 31-30 lead on a Cam Craig 3-pointer two minutes into the second half. The three capped a 14-4 run by the Bobcats, who had fallen behind 26-17 with 2:49 to go in the first half before climbing within two, 26-24, at halftime.

But after Craig’s triple, C-L’s defense limited Clarion to just one basket the remainder of the third quarter and the Lions scored 10 straight points, including four from Julian Laugand, to take control of the game.

Laugand, who was named the Hager Paving Player of the Game, talked about the win.

Defense was the catalyst of the C-L win with the Lions (2-1, 1-0) forcing 25 turnovers including 15 in the second half.

C-L’s defense led to a couple of other runs that helped the Lions to the victory.

Trailing 11-6 early, C-L went on an 11-2 run that was capped by a Laugand 3-pointer to take a 17-13 lead early in the second quarter. The, after Clarion had made it 19-17, the Lions answered with a 7-0 spurt that included a pair of Ian Callen baskets to push the lead to 26-17.

Later in the game, C-L put the contest away with a 6-0 spurt after Clarion had gotten back within nine, 47-38, on the second of two straight TiJon Faulk-Taylor hoops.

Overall, it was a balanced attack for the Lions with four players reaching double digits.

Ian Callen led the way with 14 points and six rebounds while his younger brother, Hayden Callen, had 12 points and 12 rebounds. Christian Smith chipped in with 11 points and Laugand 10 points and six boards.

Cam Craig paced Clarion with 15 points, the only Bobcat in double digits.
