Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign 2018 Run Through Labor Day

PENNSYLVANIA – According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 10,497 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes in 2016.

The enforcement campaign, Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, runs from August 17 through September 3, 2018, sending national messages about the dangers of driving impaired, aimed to drastically reduce drunk driving on our nation’s roadways.

The Labor Day holiday has become one of the deadliest, with drunk drivers endangering themselves and others on their way home from holiday festivities.

South Central PA Highway Safety (SCPAHS) Coordinator, Matthew Frampton, stated, “We need individuals to understand: It’s up to them to make smart decisions and drive sober – Labor Day, and every day. Over the 2016 Labor Day holiday period, there were 433 fatalities nationwide. That’s 433 fatalities too many.”

The American Trauma Society, Pennsylvania Division (ATSPA) and NHTSA want to remind individuals that drunk driving is illegal and to use the following tips to ensure you get home safely.

• Remind others that it is never okay to drink and drive;
• Designate a sober driver or plan to use public transportation or a ride-sharing service to get home safely;
• If you see a drunk driver on the road, contact local law enforcement; and
• Take away keys of those who are planning to drink and drive;

Frampton added, “Individuals also need to be reminded that being a designated driver does not mean you drink less. Being a designated driver means you don’t drink at all.”
