Jefferson County Okays Increase in Hotel Tax

BROOKVILLE, Pa. (EYT) – There will be more money to promote tourism in Jefferson County after the Commissioners approved raising the hotel room rental tax at Tuesday’s meeting in Brookville.

The existing tax was three percent, but as of October 1, it will be five percent.

The vote was unanimous with Commissioners Jack Matson, Jeff Pisarcik, and Herb Bullers approving the measure.

According to county Treasurer James Van Steenberg, the money raised with the tax could increase to $235,000.00. It was about $140,000.00 for the last year.

The county receives an administration fee of four percent to collect the tax and handle the paperwork, which will result in an increase from $2,400.00 to $9,500.00. Whatever is left after administration costs goes into the county’s general fund.

The Great Outdoors Visitors Bureau is the beneficiary of the money and of the total, 25 percent will be used to promote tourism solely in Jefferson County, according to Van Steenberg.

The visitors bureau, which also represents Clarion, Forest, Elk, and Cameron counties as well as the Cook Forest area, promotes tourism through its website, TV, print publications, and attendance at various outdoors shows.
