Newcomb’s 416-Yards Rushing, Record-Setting Night Helps C-L Blowout Curwensville

CURWENSVILLE, Pa. (D9Sports) – Over the year there have been many great performances by Clarion-Limestone football players.

Dan Alderton’s night at Union in 1999, Hayden Johnston’s at Redbank Valley in 2004, Scotty Davis’ vs. Keystone in 2005 all come to mind.

But nothing might top what Austin Newcomb did Friday night at Curwensville when he ran over, around, through and past the Golden Tide in a 46-14 C-L victory.

Newcomb broke the school record and nearly toppled the District 9 mark with 412 yards rushing on 28 carries while racking up 447 yards of total offense and scoring five touchdowns. It is believed that he is only the second back in D9 history to break 400 yards in a game joining D9-record holder Alex Holland of Curwensville, who had 419 in 2010 in a game at Kane.

Newcomb talked about his performance.

Newcomb scored on runs of 22, 2, 6, 18 and 80 yards.

Watch the 18-yard run in the third quarter.

In addition to the long scoring runs, the C-L junior also had a 74-yard run in the first quarter.

Ayden Wiles also scored a rushing touchdown for the Lions and had 80 yards rushing on the night, as the Lions (7-2 overall, 4-1 D9 League Small School South) racked up 569 yards of total offense.

Overshadowed by Newcomb and the offense was a Lions defense that limited Curwensville to 29 yards on the ground including zero in the first half. The Golden Tide (6-3, 3-2) came into the game averaging 193.5 yards per game.

C-L head coach Dave Eggleton talked about the win, his star running back and the defensive effort.

Curwensville did find some success on offense through the air with Noah VonGunde throwing a pair of touchdown passes. he hit Jake McCracken with a 43-yard toss and Thad Butler with a 36-yard toss. VonGunden finished 8 of 19 for 204 yards with McCracken catching five passes for 121 yards.

VonGunden was named Curwensville’s Hager Paving Player of the Game.

The victory puts C-L in a good spot for the No. 2 seed in the upcoming District 9 Class 1A playoffs. The Lions close out the regular season when they face Clarion in the annual Black & Blue Brawl at 7 p.m. Friday at Memorial Stadium.

Curwensville will take on Brockway at 7:30 p.m. at Varischetti Field in Brockway.
