SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Clarion University baseball team dropped both games of its doubleheader against Slippery Rock Saturday afternoon by scores of 6-5 and 5-4, respectively.

The losses drop the Golden Eagles to 3-10 on the season (0-4 PSAC). The Blue and Gold return to action March 29 when they head to Lock Haven to take on the Bald Eagles.

Clarion drew first blood in game one, getting on the board early as Mitch Holmberg smacked a leadoff double before scoring one batter later on a single from Tyler Falk to take a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the first.

The Rock would respond with a few of their own big innings, however. After regaining the lead in the bottom of the first thanks in part to a two-run homer from SRU DH Christian Porterfield, they would tack on two more in the second and one more each in the third and fifth to take a commanding 6-1 into the bottom of the seventh.

CU’s comeback effort began in the top of the sixth when Falk cranked another leadoff single shortly before shortstop Joe Lopez advanced him to second with a single of his own. After a John Finke hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, Austin Mike managed to reach on a fielder’s choice that drove Falk in. Cole Shaffer singled to drive in Lopez and Austin Mike cut the Rock lead to one after stealing home on a throwing error.

However the Blue and Gold could not find the tying run in the seventh as SRU hung on to win 6-5.

Game two was a back-and-forth affair as well, however this time it was Slippery Rock who managed to score first as right fielder James Divosevic scored on a passed ball from third.

Dillon Wolbert would single and later score to tie things up at 1-1, and one inning later both teams found themselves deadlocked again at 2-2. A two-run fifth inning appeared to have busted things open for CU, however, SRU managed to string together a couple of clutch hits and steal back a 5-4 lead, a lead they would maintain the remainder of the way.
