Two CNAs Accused of Choking Elderly Man at Brookville Nursing Home

BROOKVILLE, Pa. (EYT) – Three employees of a Brookville nursing home have been charged in a case of alleged abuse of two residents of the facility.

According to Brookville Borough Police Department, criminal charges have been filed against the following individuals: 20-year-old Haley B. Shirey, 20-year-old Hannah T. Shirey, and 20-year-old Rebekah L. Call, all of Strattanville.

According to a criminal complaint, on Wednesday, June 7, Officer Markle, of the Brookville Borough Police Department, responded to Laurelbrooke Landing, a facility of WRC Senior Services. The director of the facility indicated that a caregiver-in-training reported abuse toward two known Laurelbrooke Landing residents in the memory support unit.

The residents were physically and mentally abused by three staff members on June 6 between 5:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., the complaint states.

One of the residents needed to be helped up and dressed for supper. When Hannah and Haley Shirey entered his room, he was kicking and moving around while they attempted to dress him. Haley Shirey allegedly started squeezing his neck and hitting him in the face. Later that night he needed help getting ready for bed, and Haley allegedly said to several people that she would “love to punch him in the face,” the complaint continues.

Haley and Hannah went into the room to help him get ready for bed, and Hannah allegedly started choking him. The witness stated that the resident was gasping for air, the complaint indicates.

Hannah also allegedly grabbed “(the resident) by the hair, pulling it. Haley grabbed his leg and bent it toward his head causing pain to him once again,” the complaint states.

A known doctor checked the resident and observed a bruise on his forehead and a scratch on his neck, according to the complaint.

A second resident began making noises, squealing – which is usual behavior for him. Hannah Shirey allegedly then went and got a cup of ice and dumped it down the resident’s back, and he began yelling at her for her actions, the complaint states.

Rebekah Call, a LPN Supervisor, observed the actions of Haley Shirey and Hannah Shirey toward the residents. She is a mandated reporter for this type of abuse, and police indicated that she failed to report the actions of her co-workers, Haley Shirey and Hannah Shirey, according to the complaint.

WRC Senior Services released the following statement regarding the alleged incident:

WRC was made aware of potential elder abuse by two CNAs at McKinley Health Center.  The police were immediately contacted and then informed of the allegations.  The employees were also terminated. The main focus at WRC has been and will continue to be the well-being of our residents and clients.  We have a zero tolerance policy for abuse.  At this time, there is an open investigation, and WRC Senior Services is not able to comment or provide any additional details.

I hope these sick people get the full prison sentence they deserve. No leniency for abuse.

  • katherine

All three of the low life piece of shit should get at least 5 years. It’s bad enough people needs to put their loved one’s in nursing homes, and then to have low life’s like this treat them like they are nothing. Makes me sick.

  • Scott LaBenne

Attempted murder should carry a longer sentence than five years, but we’ll see what the judge in Jefferson County decides.

  • graceesmommy

There is something dark and evil in a person’s soul to do this to another human being.

I reported an agency CNA threatening to punch a resident in the face, she was sent home for the night , but returned a few nights later. It was witnessed by an LPN another CNA and myself. How is this okay? I would hate to know what she does when nobody’s around.

They belong in jail for their action’s! These type of people will continue to hurt others and need to be locked up!

  • Rita Kozina

Absolutely! Hurting the elderly is just like hurting an innocent child. That poor man couldn’t even defend himself 🙁

  • Marie Kreischer

People like this should have never even looked for employment in a nursing home in the first place! They should get a felony for this to make sure they don’t get a job like this with the public! Doing such a terrible act I can only imagine what they would do in a public food place! FELONS!!!

  • James H

May all three spend some time in jail and burn in hell for their actions.

  • Amy Trowbridge

They should get a lot more than only 5 years that’s just a slap in the wrist to some people. they tried to kill someone

  • Atlas Relffits

They better have all their licensing stripped and never be allowed to do work like that ever again!

  • lisa2303

Especially to a defenseless elderly person. I work in a nursing home if I saw one of my co-workers hurt one of my residents there is no way in hell I would look the other way. What the hell is wrong with that nurse?! We she afraid of those bitches or just useless, either way she is just as guilty if not more so. They should all do time, and never be able to work around children the elderly or even animals ever again.

  • lisa2303

I don’t know what state you work in but years ago I reported an agency stna for spitting on a resident she was fired from her agency and lost her certification.

  • Jodie Michael

Just sicking!!!! If I post what I want to say it would be deleted.New job would be clean Port-A-Potties.Never to have or be near children for they kick, scream, and mess their britches, couldn’t even IMAGINE what they would do to them.Hope they didn’t do babysitting for anyone.WOW

  • Terry Ann

Plain and simple, this is wrong. You never are going to get the job done any faster by being disrespectful to your patient … put yourself in their shoes, what type of care would you want? This makes my stomach turn .. if you cannot do your job the way you should, find another job doing something else. As for the LPN, she should lose her license … no excuse for hiding wrong-doing. I have noticed the change in people … I just don’t understand why they do not care enough.

one day they will end up in a nursing home………
