Wednesday’s HS Baseball Roundup: Punxsutawney Catching Fire at the Right Time

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (D9Sports) – Punxsutawney may have just picked the right time of year to get hot.

Joey Dipietro went 2-for-2 with a walk, a run scored and two RBIs, Isaac Stouffer added a double, a run scored and an RBI and Logan Johnston tossed a two-hitter to lead the Chucks to a 5-1 win over visiting Bradford. It was Punxsy’s fourth straight victory and moved the Chucks to 8-10 on the season.

Johnston was solid allowing one run while walking two and striking out nine.

Tyler Gigliotti had a double and a run scored for Bradford, while Danny Manion had an RBI single.

Tomas Guay took the loss going five innings allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits and four walks while striking out two.

DUBOIS 10, BROOKVILLE 3

DUBOIS, Pa. – Racking up seven runs in the first two innings, DuBois cruised to a 10-3 win over visiting Brookville at Showers’ Field.

Drew Bankovich and Braden Paulinellie each had three hits and accounted for six of the Beavers’ 10 hits off three Raiders pitchers. Both Bankovich and Paulinellie tripled as did Matt Agosti. Mitchell Ferra, Bankovich, Agosti and Ryan Pasternak each drove in two runs.

DuBois also used three pitchers with Ethan Long, Peter Foradora and Ryan Radaker. Foradora went 2 1/3 innings after replacing Long and got the win.

Tanner LaBenne and Dane Lyle each had two hits for Brookville with LaBenne doubling. Ben Caun started and was the losing pitcher.

DUBOIS CENTRAL CATHOLIC 4, CURWENSVILLE 3

CURWENSVILLE, Pa. – Michael Misiewicz struck out Zach McClure with the tying run at second base in the bottom of the seventh inning, and visiting DuBois Central Catholic escaped Curwensville with a 4-3 victory.

The Cardinals led 4-1 going to the seventh before a two-run, two-out double by Bryce Timko made things interesting.

Brandon Walker was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs to lead the DCC offense, while Justin Miknis was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored and Austin Cogley doubled, walked and scored a run.

Anthony Kness got the win in relief of Jack Frank going three innings allowing five hits while striking out five. Frank went the first three innings allowing a run on five hits while striking out one before being taken out before throwing his 50th pitch (49). Despite the seventh-inning adventures, Misiewicz got the save. He allowed a hit and a walk while also hitting a batter and striking out one.

Avery Francisco paced Curwensville going 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Timko was 2-for-4 with the double and the two RBIs, McClure was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and Ralph Evans was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Josh Terry took the loss going two innings allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits and three walks while striking out two.

CLARION 13, CLARION-LIMESTONE 0, 5 INNINGS

SHIPPENVILLE, Pa. – Reed Anthony, Sterling Conner and Spencer Miller combined to throw a five-inning no-hitter, as Clarion topped rival Clarion-Limestone, 13-0 in five innings, at the Clarion County Park.

Anthony got the win going three innings walking three and striking out five. Conner walked one in his lone inning of work, while Miller struck out one in his inning on the hill.

Meanwhile, Clarion had 12 hits off three C-L pitchers including seven extra-base hits.

Kyle Patterson went yard smacking a second-inning grand slam off Riley Hummell during a seven-run inning that put the game away for the Bobcats. Patterson was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and five RBIs.

Miller, meanwhile, had a pair of doubles and drew a walk while going 2-for-3 with two runs scored with Conner also getting a double and going 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and two RBIs. Ryan Anthony tripled while going 2-for-2 with two walks, two runs scored and two RBIs, Reed Anthony scored twice, Skylar Rhoades added a pair of RBIs and a run scored and Dominic Fleming doubled, scored a run and drove one in.

Cody Himes walked twice for C-L.

Curven Goheen took the loss going 1 ⅓ innings allowing eight runs, four earned, on three hits and four walks while striking out one. Hummell lasted ⅔ of an inning allowing three runs on three hits and two walks while striking out one. Drew Beichner allowed two unearned runs on two hits and a walk while striking out one in two innings of work.
