Friday Football Recaps: Wood’s Late TD Lifts Brockway Past Ridgway; Brookville Rolls Redbank Valley; Clearfield, DuBois Win


BROCKWAY, Pa. (D9Sports) – Jon Wood’s 4-yard touchdown run with 1:43 to play lifted unbeaten Brockway to a 24-21 win over previously unbeaten Ridgway in the AML South opener for both squads.

In a back-and-forth affair that saw four lead changes and two ties, Ridgway had taken a 21-17 lead with 6:01 to play on an electrifying 71-yard punt return for a touchdown by Neil MacDonald, who broke at least three Brockway tackles on his way to the end zone.

Ridgway’s defense then came up with an interception in the end zone by Aaron Hinton with five minutes left, but the Elkers offense couldn’t move the ball and gave Brockway one last chance to win the game.

This time the Rovers (5-0, 1-0 AML South) were on target with a 34-yard Peter Downer to Noah Vokes pass setting up the winning touchdown.

Matt Clark sealed the victory for Brockway when he picked off a Johnny Mitchell pass with 53 seconds left.

Downer was 19 of 33 for 338 yards and two interceptions in the game while also running for a 1-yard touchdown.

Woods added a 13-yard scoring run that gave the Rovers a 14-7 second-quarter lead, and Zane Puhala broke a 14-all tie – the game had been tied at 14 since a MacDonald 15-yard scoring reception with 7.9 seconds left in the first half – with 35-yard field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter.

MacDonald also scored Ridgway’s first touchdown on a 32-yard touchdown run that gave the Elkers, who wore a helmet sticker with the number 33 for injured teammate Joey Elinski, an early 7-0 lead.

BROOKVILLE 53, REDBANK VALLEY 22

BROOKVILLE, Pa. – Climbing back into the game after a 10-0 first-quarter deficit, Brookville celebrated its Homecoming Night with a 53-22 win over Redbank Valley Friday night.

The Raiders (4-1) outscored the Bulldogs (2-2), 40-12, over the final three quarters as quarterback Jack Krug completed 16 of 24 passes for 241 yards and five touchdowns, two each to Bryan Dworek and Nick Keth.

Dworek caught nine passes for 80 yards scoring on two second-half touchdown strikes from Krug covering 31 and 24 yards. In the third quarter, he also returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown for the second time in his career, a big turning point in the game when the Bulldogs were down 26-16 and knocking on the end zone door. Dworek also added 86 yards in kick and punt return yardage and boomed two punts of 62 and 56 yards.

Krug threw a 26-yard touchdown to Keth in the first half and a 16-yarder in the third quarter and connected with Cabe Park on a 53-yard touchdown in the first half. Brandon McGranor ran for 98 yards on 14 carries with a 10-yard TD run to open the second half and put the Raiders up 26-16.

The Bulldogs led 10-0 after the first quarter on Clint Thurston’s 3-yard run and 29-yard field goal. Quarterback Keaton Kahle, who completed 8 of 18 passes for 127 yards, threw a 39-yard TD pass to Ethan Hetrick in the second quarter, but was also involved in two plays resulting in Raiders safeties. On a broken play after a bad center snap in shotgun formation, Kahle tried to throw the ball away, but wound up throwing it behind the line of scrimmage and out of the end zone. He was also called for intentional grounding while throwing out of his own end zone, resulting in another safety that gave the Raiders a 19-16 lead with 1:55 left in the half.

Thurston scored the Bulldogs’ only second-half points with a 48-yard run with 25.3 seconds left in the third quarter. He finished with 192 yards on 22 carries.

KARNS CITY 42, PUNXSUTAWNEY 32

KARNS CITY, Pa. – Dalton Beham ran for 279 yards and five touchdowns on 19 carries, as Karns City overcame four turnovers to top visiting Punxsutawney, 42-32

Three of Beham’s scores came after halftime, including two in the fourth quarter, to help the Gremlins (3-2, 2-1 KSAC Large School) expand on a two-point, 21-19, halftime lead.

It was actually still a two-point game, 28-26, after three quarters before Beham’s scores made it 42-26 late in the game.

Punxsutawney got a 50-yard Dylan Ishman to Tyler Richardson touchdown pass with 41 seconds left to get within 10 but failed on the two-point conversion before recovering the on-side kick.

Hunter Rowe added an 18-yard scoring run for Karns City in the second quarter and finished with 60 yards on seven carries.

Ishman and Richardson had big nights for the Chucks (1-4, 1-3) with Ishman going 16 of 25 passing for 303 yards and four touchdowns while adding a 12-yard touchdown run. Richardson had eight catches for 191 yards and two scores also catching a 56-yard touchdown pass.

Alex Gianvito also caught a pair of scoring passes from Ishman and had four catches for 87 yards.

The game featured only one punt, by Punxsutawney. Karns City’s four turnovers including an interception and three lost fumbles including losing a fumble at the Chucks 1-yard line at the end of the first half.

KANE 57, CURWENSVILLE 0

KANE, Pa. – Erik Delong carried the ball 19 times for 224 yards and four touchdowns, as Kane rolled past previously unbeaten Curwensville, 57-0, in Kane.

Ange Costanzo added eight carries for 94 yards and a touchdown for the Wolves (5-0, 1-0 AML South), who have now won 33 straight games against District 9 teams, with Jake Alcorn chipping in eight carries for 60 yards and a score. Ray Maze chipped in three catches for 48 yards and a score from Reed Williams, who was 5 of 11 passing for a touchdown and two interceptions. Gunner Fryzlewicz returned an interception for a touchdown,

Kane’s defense meanwhile held Curwensville’s Nick Stewart, the all-time leading District 9 rusher to a season-low 54 unofficial yards. The Golden Tide are now 4-1 overall and 0-1 in the South.

DUBOIS 34, WARREN 17

DUBOIS, Pa. – Dalton Kruzelak ran for a career-high 159 yards and three touchdowns to help DuBois to a 34-17 win over visiting Warren.

All three Kruzelak scores came in the second half after DuBois (2-3, 2-2 District 10, Region 5) led 7-3 at halftime but scored 20 points in the third quarter to Warren’s 14.

Kruzelak, who entered the game with on eight and seven yards and added a 4-yard run late in the game.

DuBois, which did not have a passing touchdown, also got a 90-yard punt return from Kyle Hopson and a 1-yard scoring run from Kenny Garvey.

Warren’s lone offensive touchdown came on a 17-yard Jake Kupchella pass to Ryan Arnold. The Dragons (1-4, 1-3) also scored on a 20-yard Kohl Nosel interception return and on a 31-yard Seth Harrington field goal.

Garvey added 46 yards on seven carries for DuBois, while Matt Miller was 10 of 18 passing for 103 yards and an interception.

Kupchella ran for 51 yards and was 12 of 30 passing for 184 yards and the touchdown. Nosel had six catches for 106 yards with Arnold adding three for 37 and the score.

CLEARFIELD 49, CENTRAL MOUNTAIN 10

MILL HALL, Pa. – Isaac Rumery threw four touchdown passes and ran for a fifth as Clearfield broke a two-game losing streak with a 49-10 win at Central Mountain.

Rumery was 12 of 17 passing for 269 yards throwing two touchdowns to Micah Heichel and one each to Taye Lynch and Spencer Graham. Rummery had eight carries for 24 yards.

Heichel had two catches for 111 yards and the scores with Lynch adding two grabs for 52 yards and the touchdown.

Brett Zattoni and Luke McGonigal also scored on the ground for the Bison with Zattoni running 12 times for 51 yards. Ty Bender added 86 yards rushing for Clearfield (3-2).
