PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (EYT) – Punxsy Pizza received a helping hand from Punxsutawney volunteer firefighters on their way to raising $43,000 this weekend as part of the 13th Annual ‘Punxsy Pizza & Prevention’ event.

Devin Mesoraco, catcher for the Cincinnati Reds, helped Punxsy Pizza make pizzas for the event.

Each year, Punxsy Pizza and local volunteer firefighters team up for the event to promote disaster prevention and awareness.

From 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, local firemen delivered pizza and checked each customer’s smoke alarm in the process. Free smoke detectors and batteries were provided by Kengersky Insurance to those in need. Pizza was also available for pickup.

This year, Devin Mesoraco, a Punxsutawney native and catcher for the Cincinnati Reds, stopped by for a guest appearance to help make pizzas and meet with members of the community.

Throughout the day, Punxsy Pizza ran four ovens to make a total of 4,418 pizzas, 215 of which were delivered by local fireman, said owner Scott Anthony.

Anthony said he was very pleased with how the event turned out, “We had a lot of community support for this event. The day was very busy, but it went smoothly.”

A total of $43,000 was raised, with 100% of coupon sales donated to the Punxsutawney Fire Department.
