50th Annual Groundhog Festival Kicks Off July 3

Groundhog FestPUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (EYT) –Punxsutawney is gearing up for its 50th anniversary Groundhog Festival in Barclay Square from July 3 through July 9.

This year’s Groundhog Festival will host over 30 craft vendors, 19 food booths, nightly musical acts, and children’s rides and games.

The annual Fourth of July fireworks show will take place Monday, July 4, at 9:30 p.m.

Roger Steele, chairperson for the Groundhog Festival, said the event gives local residents something to look forward to in the summer. He commented that without local individual and business support, the festival would not have continued for as long at it has.

“We’re so fortunate that this community gives us the money to allow us to [put on this event.] It’s an easy sell as sponsorship to the Groundhog Festival each year,” Steele said.

Steele said the Groundhog Festival averages 2,500 to 5,000 visitors daily, who are free to set up lawn chairs for the evening musical acts and peruse the craft and food booths.

This year’s event line-up will comprise genres ranging from gospel to country and oldies to rock. Musical acts will include Randy/Paul Thompson-Gospel/Christian Music, Beatlemania Magic, and Against The Grain-Variety Music.

The festival charges no admission fee and is open daily from 12:00 p.m. to 10:00-10:30 p.m., depending on the day.
