Henry M. Hughes was born in Rockland Township, Venango County, to James and Mary (Mallory) Hughes.

His grandfather, James Hughes, Sr., was one of the pioneers of the Scrubgrass region. His grandfather engaged in operating a grist and sawmill and later embarked in the iron business.

Hughes’ father, James Hughes, Jr., was also an active business man and operated mills in various parts of Venango County.

Hughes received his education in the common schools, at an academy at Nelson, OH, and at Allegheny College in Meadville.

In 1857, he moved to Kansas.

At the outbreak of the U.S. Civil War, Hughes enlisted in Company K of the Fourth Pennsylvania Cavalry. He served until honorably discharged on October 17, 1864.

During his time in the Fourth Pennsylvania Calvary, Hughes rose to the rank of captain and filled the position of Chief of Staff of the Second Brigade, Second Division, Cavalry Corps.

After the war, Hughes relocated to Plumer and was connected for a time with the United States revenue service.

He was subsequently one of the organizers of the Antwerp Pipe Line Company, and upon its consolidation with the United Pipe Lines, became secretary of the latter.

Hughes married Frances A. Richardson on November 27, 1859. Together they were the parents of nine children.

Hughes died in Valparaiso, Saunders County, Nebraska, in September 9, 1885.
