AmeriCorps Spotlight: Deric Munoz, Punxsutawney Area High School

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. – Deric Munoz is serving AmeriCorps at Punxsutawney Area High School.

The following article is an interview with Deric:

Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

My name is Deric Munoz, and I am serving with the Punxsutawney Area High School.

In May of 2014, I graduated from Clarion University with a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education with a Social Studies certification. Shortly after graduation, I had the realization that I did not know what I was going to do next. I realized that deep down I still had not found myself.

AmeriCorps has given me the opportunity to spend a year term of service searching to find myself. Through AmeriCorps, I have been able to feed and clothe members of my community. I have the opportunity to work with students every day and really build the connection that I know will impact them the rest of their lives.

AmeriCorps has given me a route that will allow me to find myself and will also give me the experience needed to become a full time teacher after my term of service.
