Apartment Fire in Punxsy Under Investigation

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. (EYT) – A state police fire marshal unit is investigating an apartment building fire that took place early Sunday morning in Punxsutawney.

According to Ridgway-based State Police, the fire occurred around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, January 30, at 214 W. Mahoning Street in Punxsutawney, Jefferson County.

Elk Run Volunteer Fire Company and a crew of five firefighters arrived to fight the blaze, according to the fire company’s Facebook post.

The bulk of the fire was reportedly out within minutes as the crew made an aggressive effort on the second floor of the building, fighting not only the fire but also temperatures of -8 degrees Fahrenheit, the Facebook post states.

One firefighter was transported to the hospital after slipping on ice. He was later released with minor injuries.

The building damaged by the fire is a three-story, seven unit apartment.

The victims are listed as two Punxsutawney men, a 67-year-old and a 34-year-old.

An area of origin for the fire was established but a cause was not determined.

The total damages of the fire are reported at $235,000.00.

Police say a PSP fire marshal unit was subsequently called to investigate the origin and cause of the fire.

The investigation is ongoing.
