BELL TWP., Pa. (EYT) – Felony charges have been filed against an area woman who reportedly stole nearly $20,000.00 cash from her deceased brother’s home, hiding it from her niece who was supposed to inherit it.
Court documents indicate the Punxsutawney-based State Police filed criminal charges against 68-year-old Beverly Ann Davis, of DuBois.
According to a criminal complaint, around 10:00 a.m. on August 17, 2020, a known victim went to the Punxsutawney-based State Police to report a theft of a large sum of inherited money.
According to the complaint, the victim reported that her aunt, Beverly Davis, stole and retained money from her father’s residence which did not belong to her.
The victim told police her father had passed away on March 2, 2020, and on August 14, she was informed by two known individuals who were friends of her father’s that they had seized a large sum of money from her father’s residence on the day of his passing. The individuals were also the ones who had discovered her father deceased at his residence.
The victim reported the two individuals told her that after discovering her father deceased, they had contacted his sister, BBeverly Davis, and Davis had instructed them to collect all the money they found in the residence and deliver it to her. She then reportedly hid and stored the money throughout her home in Punxsutawney and told the two individuals not to discuss the existence of the money with the victim or police.
Police then spoke to the witnesses about what they had told the victim.
The two individuals told police the money was stored in a total of six shopping bags, all of which were full. One of the witnesses reportedly stated one of the bags was counted at Davis’s residence and contained approximately $9,000.00 in cash.
Police then interviewed Davis.
According to the complaint, Davis admitted to keeping the money and intentionally withholding it from its rightful owner, identified as the victim. Davis reportedly told police she had plans to move to New Mexico and confessed to mailing all of the money to her other brother’s home there.
The complaint states the United States Postal Service then assisted in locating the package containing the money, which was shipped on August 14, 2020. The package was then intercepted and seized by the USPS before being relinquished to the State Police.
It was then determined the package contained $19,130.00, the complaint indicates.
The following charges were filed against Davis through Magisterial District Judge Jacqueline J. Mizerock’s office on August 9:
– Theft By Unlawful Taking-Movable Property, Felony 3
– Receiving Stolen Property, Felony 3
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on September 21 with Judge Mizerock presiding.
