Assault Charges Against Jefferson County Woman Move Forward After Scuffle With Authorities at Brookville Hospital

BROOKVILLE, Pa. (EYT) – A Jefferson County woman waived her preliminary hearing last week on assault charges related to an incident in which she allegedly struggled with authorities and attempted to bite a probation officer at the Brookville Hospital.

According to court documents, the following charges against 46-year-old Tausha Joel Bartlebaugh, of Punxsutawney, were waived for court on Thursday, May 2:

– Aggravated Assault, Felony 2
– Simple Assault, Misdemeanor 2
– Disorderly Conduct Hazardous/Physical Offense, Misdemeanor 3

The charges have been transferred to the Jefferson County Court of Common Pleas.

Bartlebaugh remains lodged in the Jefferson County Jail on $20,000.00 monetary bail.

Details of the case:

According to a criminal complaint, around 4:50 p.m. on Friday, March 29, Officers Gallagher and Turnbull, of the Brookville Borough Police Department, met with two probation officers at the Brookville Hospital to assist with a person who was being unruly.

The complaint notes that when Officer Gallagher walked into the emergency room, he could hear Tausha Bartlebaugh yelling and screaming at the probation officers, saying she would “knock them the (expletive) out,” and heard one of the probation officers struggling with Bartlebaugh, so he and Officer Turnbull went into the room to assist the probation officer.

According to the complaint, during the struggle, Officer Gallagher noticed Bartlebaugh had her mouth open and was bringing it towards one of the probation officer’s hands. Officer Gallagher then used his hand to press back on Bartlebaugh’s head just as her mouth came into contact with the officer’s hand.

The group of officers were then able to get Bartlebaugh’s hands cuffed in front of her.

Officer Gallagher checked on the probation officer and asked if she wanted charges pressed, and she stated she did. Officer Gallagher then finished assisting probation with getting Bartlebaugh cleared to go to the jail and cleared the scene around 6:00 p.m.

The complaint notes Officer Gallagher later received additional information about the incident, including a report filed by the probation officer who noted she felt Bartlebaugh’s teeth on her hand before Officer Gallagher was able to push Bartlebaugh’s head away. The report also noted the probation officer later went to the hospital for shoulder pain from the struggle and was told she had left rotator cuff strain.

Based on the investigation, Bartlebaugh was arraigned at 10:40 a.m. on April 17, in front of Magisterial District Judge Gregory M. Bazylak.
