Baby Ejected from Amish Buggy in North Mahoning Township Crash

NORTH MAHONING TWP., Pa. (EYT) – A three-week-old female infant was ejected from a horse and buggy yesterday morning during a collision that occurred along Route 954, in North Mahoning Township, Indiana County.

According to Punxsutawney-based State Police, around 8:16 a.m. on October 6, John E. Poling, Jr., 69, of Punxsutawney, and Ivan M. Miller, 22, of Smicksburg, were traveling north on Route 954 just south of Route 210 in North Mahoning Township.

Glare from the sun reportedly interfered with Poling’s ability to see clearly, which caused his 2002 Chevrolet Malibu to strike the rear end of Miller’s horse and buggy.

Police say that upon impact, a 3-week-old female infant was ejected from the buggy.

The 3-week-old infant was transported to Punxsutawney Hospital by Jefferson County EMS for possible injuries.

Poling was wearing a seat belt and suffered suspected minor injuries.

Miller and an adult passenger – Sara D. Miller, 20, also of Smicksburg – were not injured.

The buggy sustained heavy damage and was towed from the scene by Southside Towing.

Perry Township Fire Department assisted at the scene.
