Raku is an ancient Japanese, hands-on firing process that allows participants to get up close and personal with the flame, pots, and kiln.

Pots created through this process are removed from the kiln while they are glowing red hot, then placed in a combustible material, such as sawdust or newspaper, in order to develop their signature color in the clay or glaze.

The two-day workshop offered through Brockway Center for Arts and Technology offers participants one evening of making their very own unique pieces on Friday, July 12, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for the firing. Each participant will be able to create three to five pieces to be fired the following week.

On Friday, July 19, participants will return, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., to watch the art of raku firing unfold, and take part in the interactive process.

Cost of this two-day workshop is $50. It is available to participants 18 and up only. Refreshments and snacks will be provided. Protective clothing and shoes are required and paces are very limited.

Anyone interested or looking to register may contact Liana Agnew at liana.agnew@brockwaycat.org or 814-265-1111 ext. 204.
