Brookville Police Receive Report of Child with Gun at Hickory Grove Elementary School

BROOKVILLE, Pa. (EYT) – On May 15, the Brookville Police Department responded to a call from the Brookville Area School District. They were notified by a parent that another parent had posted on social media that letters were discovered stating that a child was bringing a firearm to Hickory Grove Elementary School in Brookville Borough today.

The district had no knowledge of such letters, according to police.

Sandra Craft, Superintendent, contacted the Jefferson County 911 Center. They then dispatched Brookville Police to the school.

School and district staff utilized security “wands” to search students entering the school. They also searched all backpacks, etc., entering the building.

Brookville Police were on the scene to assist if anything was found.

Police say no firearms were located.

The response by the district and public safety was without complications.

According to police, a problem arose when a parent decided that it was more appropriate to post the information on social media than to notify the district or police.

Brookville Police are requesting that if people receive information such as this, they resist the urge to utilize social media, and notify the proper entities, so they will be able to take appropriate action to avoid tragedy.
