UPDATE: Fire Extinguished at Former Porter School

PORTER TWP., Pa. (EYT) – Multiple local fire companies responded to the scene of a structure fire Monday in Porter Township, Clarion County.

Clarion County 911 says New Bethlehem Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched to a working structure fire at the former Porter Township School on Rockville Road around 4:30 p.m.

Distant, Hawthorn, Limestone, Rimersburg, and Sligo were dispatched to the scene a short time later, according to Clarion County 911.

Sources on the scene say a portion of the abandoned building was completely engulfed in flames as of 5:45 p.m., and the roof collapsed.

“The floors were too weak for us to go inside and fight the fire, so we stayed outside to contain it,” said Hawthorn Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Curt Kiehl.

“Getting a water supply was also an issue at first because there are not a lot of ponds near that area,” said Kiehl. “We had to pull water from a small stream.”

The fire was fully extinguished around 8 p.m.

No injuries were reported.
