UPDATE: Two Dead in Interstate 80 Pile-ups

S3860075UNION TWP., Pa. (EYT) – Two people are dead following separate multi-vehicle accidents on Interstate 80 Monday.

Jefferson County 911 says the accident happened around 11:00 a.m. during whiteout conditions in the area of Interstate 80 eastbound at Exit 73 (Corsica).

Sources say approximately 20 vehicles were involved in the accident.

Following the accident, an oncoming tractor-trailer then struck a stopped vehicle that was involved in the initial crash.

DuBois-based State Police say a GMC Sierra operated by a known male then struck the rear of the tractor-trailer.

A second tractor-trailer then struck the rear of the GMC Sierra, traveling over the top of the vehicle and crushing it.

The driver of the GMC Sierra was killed in the accident.

Both tractor-trailer operators suffered minor injuries.

No names have been released as of Monday evening.

“Further details will be released upon completion of the investigation and notifications,” said Tpr. Wilson in a release issued Monday.

The roadway was closed for several hours while authorities investigated the crash and crews removed the wreckage.

Traffic was detoured onto U.S. Route 322.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Pennsylvania State Police, Corsica Volunteer Fire Company, Brookville Volunteer Fire Company, Pine Creek Township Volunteer Fire Company, Strattanville Volunteer Fire Department, and Jefferson County EMS.

Additionally, a second person was killed in a crash involving multiple vehicles near mile marker 104 on Interstate 80 westbound in Clearfield County. The roadway was closed following the crash but has since re-opened.

According to DuBois-based State Police, the fatal crash near mile marker 104 occurred as a tractor-trailer jackknifed and was blocking both lanes of I-80 westbound.

Police say a Ford Freestar, a Dodge Ram, a Toyota Sienna, and a Honda Element (all driven by known males) then struck the tractor-trailer. The male in the Ford Freestar began to exit his vehicle and was struck by a second tractor-trailer, and as a result, he was killed.

A known female passenger in the Toyota Sienna suffered minor injuries.

No further details were released.
