One Dead, One Seriously Injured in I-80 Construction Zone Crash

BEAVER TWP., Pa. (EYT) – One person was killed and another was seriously injured in a two-vehicle accident that shut down Interstate 80 for several hours Monday night.

Clarion-based State Police say the crash occurred around 5:34 p.m. on Interstate 80 eastbound near mile marker 57.7.

According to police, a 2013 Freightliner tractor trailer operated by 43-year-old Monique Shields, of Chicago, Il., was stopped in a line of traffic waiting to enter the construction area near the Clarion River Bridge when the rear of the tractor trailer was struck by an oncoming 2014 Ford Fusion.

Police say the driver of the car, 26-year-old James R. Martin, of Sterling Heights, Mi., failed to realize that Shields’ truck was stopped.

Martin died while being airlifted to a Pittsburgh hospital.

A passenger in Martin’s car, 26-year-old Amy R. Martin, also of Sterling Heights, Mi., suffered major injuries in the crash. There is no word on her current condition.

Interstate 80 eastbound between exit 45 and exit 60 was closed for several hours while crews worked to clear the scene. Traffic was diverted off Interstate 80 exit 45 to Route 322 via Route 38, causing major traffic backups throughout the area.

Police say the crash remains under investigation.

Clarion Hospital EMS, PennDOT, Bauer Truck Repair, and Frye’s Towing assisted at the scene.
