Brock Zacherl Wins but Clarion U. Wrestling Falls to Cleveland State

CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion wrestling team continued to battle and won four of the last six bouts on the mat, but the Golden Eagles were unable to overcome Cleveland State in falling 23-12 to the Vikings at Tippin Gymnasium on Saturday.

With the loss Clarion falls to 4-9 overall, 2-3 in Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) competition.

The Vikings came out strong, winning the first four matches of the night, but Clarion never said die in collecting an impressive series of wins as the rest of the match went along. In particular, the Golden Eagles won the final three matches of the evening, With Evan DeLong, Mike Pavasko and Dominic Rigous emerging victorious to end the night.

Cleveland State led 14-0 after the first four matches but Brock Zacherl put the Golden Eagles on the board in the fifth, improving to 19-1 overall on the season with a decision over Michael Carlone at 141. Zacherl led 7-3 over Carlone after two periods, picking up three takedowns in that span to put Carlone on his heels. Carlone tied the bout at 6-6 with a third-period takedown, but Zacherl held the riding time advantage to claim the 7-6 win.

DeLong beat Nathan Wynkoop 10-7 at 165 pounds for the second win of the evening. He was in control early in the first period, picking up a takedown with back points to go up 4-1 after three minutes of action. He added another takedown and led 7-3 after two periods but Wynkoop fought back to tie it at 7-7 late in the bout. DeLong got a key reversal over Wynkoop to go up 9-7 and used the riding advantage to win the bout 10-7.

Pavasko’s win over Gabe Stark at 174 came in sudden victory, with the senior coming back from a 2-1 deficit to win 7-5 in overtime. Pavasko took down Stark twice in the third period to tie the score at 5-5, and ripped another takedown with nine seconds remaining in the first overtime to claim the 7-5 victory. Rigous won a tight match with Xavier Dye at 185 pounds, going ahead 4-2 after two periods and getting a late escape against Dye for the 5-4 win.
