Brockway 2020 Budget Has No Tax Increase

BROCKWAY, Pa. (EYT) – The Brockway Borough Council saw its way to a 2020 budget with no tax increase.

“We were very fortunate, as we spent weeks working on this budget, to pass it without any tax increases,” Councilman Mike Martino said. Martino thanked everyone who worked on the committee and Borough Manager Laurie Wayne.

During the meeting, the borough discussed handicapped parking spaces. The issues involve available spaces, location of ramps, and inclines near those ramps. The street crew will count the spaces in the borough to help with this determination.

The water line relocation project is done, but the borough is still holding part of its payment to make sure that the grass grows. In addition, the contractor will need to fix a stretch of sidewalk that has footprints in it.

The borough will be contacting another contractor after the completion of the sewer line project along Bond Street did not meet the borough’s standards. The contractor will be given the opportunity to rectify the situation. The council is considering moving the paving of that stretch of street to 2020 instead of 2022.

The fire department has had one call in the borough for the month of December. The pancake dinner was not as well attended as in the past, and the firefighters believe that was due to the weather on that Sunday. Chief Ralph Reed is stepping back from duties as fire chief, taking an assistant chief role. He has held the chief position for three years. Mike Hoskavich will take over as chief in January.

The borough office will be closed on December 25 and 26. The borough also declared that parking in the borough’s metered spots is free for the month of December.

Council President Chris “Smoke” Benson wished the community a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
