PITTSBURGH (D9Sports) – Mike Napoleone scored on a penalty kick with just two minutes left in the second overtime, as Sewickley Academy ended Brockway’ season with a 3-2 victory in the opening round of the PIAA Class 1A playoffs at Fox Chapel High School.

The win capped a comeback from a goal down by the WPIAL champion Panthers, who trailed 2-1 following a tally by Brockway’s Carter Adams five minutes into the second half.
Sewickley Academy tied the game at two in the 72nd minute on a goal by Brennan Doyle, his second of the game. Doyle had given the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute before Angelo Inzana tied the game for the District 9 runner-up Rovers in the 35th minute.
Napoleone got the penalty shot in the second overtime after a handball was called on Brockway in the box.
Sewickley Academy will face District 5 champion Windber in the quarterfinals Saturday at a site and time to be determined. Brockway finishes the season 14-3-1.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
VINCENTIAN ACADEMY 4, BROCKWAY 0
DUBOIS, Pa. – Behind a Lauren Donnelly hat trick, Vincentian Academy, the third-place finisher out of the WPIAL, beat District 9 champion Brockway, 4-0, in the opening round of the PIAA Class 1A tournament at the turf field at DuBois High School.
Liz Gorman also scored for the Royals, who will take on WPIAL runner-up Greensburg Central Catholic in the quarterfinals Saturday at a time and place to be determined.
Brockway ends the season 15-4.
SHADY SIDE ACADEMY 6, DUBOIS CENTRAL CATHOLIC 0
ALLISON PARK, Pa. – WPIAL champion Shady Side Academy got a hat trick from Sophia McMahon to top District 9 runner-up DuBois Central Catholic, 6-0, in the opening round of the PIAA Class 1A playoffs at Hampton High School.
DCC (17-2-1) played SSA strong for the first 20 minutes but the WPIAL champs proved to be too much in the end.
Shady Side Academy will take on District 10 champion Wilmington in the quarterfinals Saturday at a site and time to be determined.
MOON 5, DUBOIS 0
HARMONY, Pa. – Moon, the WPIAL champion, built a 3-0 halftime lead on its way to a 5-0 victory over District 9 champion DuBois in the opening round of the PIAA Class 3A playoffs at Seneca Valley High School.
Emily Orr, Delaney Snyder and McKenzie Sheldon scored first-half goals for the Tigers with Sheldon’s coming with just 38 seconds left in the first half.
Abby McEnroe and Sarah Collins then added markers after halftime.
DuBois finishes the year 13-4-1.
Moon will take on District 3 champion Manheim Central in the quarterfinals Saturday at a site and time to be announced.
VOLLEYBALL
WEST ALLEGHENY 3, PUNXSUTAWNEY 0
CRANBERRY TWP., Pa. – WPIAL champion West Allegheny rolled to an easy 3-0 (25-13, 25-9, 25-11) win over District 9 champion Punxsutawney in the opening round of the PIAA Class 3A volleyball tournament at Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic High School.
Leah Miller and Chelsea Snyder each had four kills for the Lady Chucks (15-6), while Snyder, Alli Lunger, Grace Neal and Mia Lingenfelter each had an ace. Miller added a pair of blocks and Lingenfelter nine digs on defense. Midori Bridges and Tessa Winebark each had five set assists.
West Allegheny will face WPIAL third-place finisher Knoch in the quarterfinals Saturday at a site and time to be determined.
MAPLEWOOD 3, A-C VALLEY 0
MEADVILLE, Pa. – Despite eight kills and two blocks apiece from Josey Terwilliger and Olivia Boocks, District 10 champion Maplewood ended the season of District 9 runner-up A-C Valley, 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-16) in the opening round of the PIAA Class 1A playoffs at Meadville High School.
Kylee Eaton added four kills and nine digs for the Lady Falcons (16-3), while Terwilliger had nine digs and Boocks eight.
Cassie Schwalm chipped in 12 digs for A-C Valley with Sydney Rankin running the offense with 18 set assists and adding nine digs. Jaleigh Seigal had eight digs.
Maplewood will take on WPIAL champion Greensburg Central Catholic in the quarterfinals Saturday at a time and place to be determined.
GREENSBURG CENTRAL CATHOLIC 3, ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 0
GREENSBURG, Pa. – WPIAL champion Greensburg Central Catholic was too much for District 9 third-place finisher Elk County Catholic taking a 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-22) victory over the Lady Crusaders in the opening round of the PIAA Class 1A playoffs at Hempfield High School.
“They came at us early with a big middle attack in the first two games and built a lead we couldn’t overcome,” ECC interim head coach Rick Fox said. “We played much better in game three, even leading 22-19 late in the game, but we could not put them away.”
Fox said unforced errors have always been a concern of ECC’s.
“We made too many,” Fox said. “A team like Greensburg will make you pay for those mistakes.”
ECC also couldn’t get its offense going.
“We averaged over 10 kills per game all season,” Fox said. “We had less than seven per game this match. Our passing could have been better, which would have helped. But GCC’s defense was great tonight.”
Fox was pleased with how his team performed this year finishing 16-2.
“It was a great run with a great group of kids,” Fox said. “We will miss our seniors and are thankful for their leadership.”
Mikayla Bisignani had 18 kills to pace GCC with Christina Cochenour adding 12 digs.
Greensburg Central Catholic will face Maplewood in the quarterfinals Saturday at a time and place to be determined.
BOYS’ SOCCER
SETON-La SALLE 1, PORT ALLEGANY 0
BRADFORD, Pa. – A mid-first half goal by Darryl Daniels was all WPIAL third-place finisher Seton-La Salle needed to oust District 9 champion Port Allegany from the PIAA Class 1A playoffs, 1-0, in the opening round at Bradford’s Parkway Field.
Daniels, an all-state winger for the highly regarded Rebels who got upset in the WPIAL semifinals, buried one behind Port Allegany keeper Josh Mealy at the 18:28 mark of the opening half.
Port had some opportunities the rest of the game but couldn’t find.
The Gators finish the year 18-3, while Seton-La Salle will get a chance for revenge when it meets WPIAL runner-up Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic in the quarterfinals Saturday at a site and time to be announced. CWNC beat Seton-La Salle in the WPIAL semifinals.
