The process to get the new uniforms started a year ago with discussions about how they should look. Before any uniforms could be ordered, various ideas had to come together to form a look that will last for many years to come.

“The uniforms are designed to incorporate a reflection of the formality of our old uniforms,” Director of Bands Justin Salada said. “We had tuxedo designs before, so we brought those hard lines into the new uniforms. We also brought in modern shapes and look to it.

“We included the band’s new visual identity. The shield is stitched on the front of the coat. It represents our school better.”

The red and black color scheme of the Brockway Rovers remained with new grays and whites worked in. The shield symbol is already in the band hallway at Brockway Area Junior-Senior High School, so adding it to the uniforms made sense.

The old uniforms served Brockway for a decade, so the new ones have a long life ahead of them.

The uniforms, made by Sunbury Uniforms, were approved during a school board meeting at the end of 2018. In that meeting, the board said that the band boosters would help with the cost. The total cost of the new outfits cost over $19,000.00. This is the first time the uniforms have seen action.

The more-breathable material makes the uniforms more comfortable in hotter weather. However, the uniform comes with insulated additions to keep the band members warm during winter performances.

Nevertheless, comfort is not the biggest benefit.

“One of the biggest cost-savings will be that they no longer need to be dry-cleaned,” Salada said. “Instead of sending them out every other week, we just throw them into the washing machine.”

The “new-look” Brockway Rover Band played at Varischetti Foundation’s Family Day on Saturday, August 10.

They debuted their outfits with new music from their upcoming show. Salada said the band was excited to show the community what the new season will bring.

“The kids are very excited this year,” Salada said. “It shows in the quality of work they’re doing.”
