Brockway NHS Inducts New Members

BROCKWAY, Pa. (EYT) – The 34th Annual National Honors Society Induction Ceremony at Brockway Area Junior-Senior High School saw 17 new members join the ranks.

NHS President Austin Bullers opened up the evening, introducing the history of National Honors Society in general and Brockway in particular. Brockway’s chapter of National Honors Society was chartered in 1985. Then other NHS officers give speeches on the various aspects of NHS membership. This year, Hunter Allenbaugh was vice president, Bryce Grecco was secretary, and Madison Barefield was treasurer.

To the NHS Register, Brockway added Noah Bash, Benjamin Glasl, Alexis Gorham, Lilyanna Henry, Karissa Holt, Mackenzie Hook, Cassidy Kahle, Clifford Kinser, Sydney Manno, Madelyn Newcome, Morgan Pirow, Alyx Rosman, Emily Roush, Grace Stewart, Sara Trunzo, Rylee Welsh, and Jena Zimmerman.

NHS chooses students based on four characteristics: character, scholarship, leadership, and service. Students have to have an A average to be considered for NHS, and of those eligible, a committee of teachers chooses those who best exemplify the core characteristics. The students write an essay to explain their leadership, character, and service to the committee.

At the end of the induction ceremony, the seniors signed the NHS Register. With the induction ceremony happening in the middle of April, this event, along with various senior nights for sports, is one of the first moments when seniors realize how soon their academic careers are coming to a close. The NHS historian, Callie Barber for 2019, keeps the book, bringing it to the stage for this night. 15 seniors signed the book.

NHS Faculty Advisor Tim Chelednik took a moment to thank the seniors and other NHS members for the SIDS Awareness Walk they organized in Brockway. The walk raised over $3000 to donate to Penn Highlands Hospital.

Allenbaugh, Barber, Barefield, Bullers, and Grecco were joined by fellow seniors Jenna Ceriani, Matthew Clark, Jordan Faith, Clayton Heckman, Dalton Hook, Maria Hynds, Curtis Krug, Cecilia Manno, Zane Puhala, and Kiersten Voccola.

As his last act as NHS president, Bullers reflected on the importance of joining organizations like NHS.

“NHS helps promote character, service, and leadership, and shows how good your community can be,” Bullers said. “The new members now get a chance to promote these things.”
