Brookville Man Charged for Gift Card Theft from Area Business

BROOKVILLE BOROUGH, Pa. (EYT) – Theft charges have been filed against a Brookville man who is accused of stealing a gift card from an area business.

Court documents indicate the Brookville Borough Police Department filed criminal charges against 30-year-old Jake Thomas McAlexander.

According to a criminal complaint, around 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, January 2, Brookville Borough Police were dispatched to the Sheetz store on West Main Street for a report of a theft.

At the scene, employees informed police that Jacob McAlexander came into the store and attempted to purchase a gift card using a paper check. The check was immediately denied and McAlexander was advised that he needed to pay for the card by the manager.

According to the complaint, McAlexander said he had to get his debit card from his vehicle. He then allegedly went to his vehicle and returned with a different gift card, that was never activated or had money put on it, returning this card as the original.

The mismatch in the serial numbers between the card that was returned and the card that was attempted to be purchased was then noticed, and employees of the business contacted police.

The complaint notes the total value the business lost was $105.95.

According to the complaint, police contacted McAlexander, and he then admitted to having the card and said he would return it in half of an hour. However, he did not do so. The card was then deactivated by Sheetz, and it was requested that charges be filed against McAlexander.

McAlexander was arraigned in front of Magisterial District Judge Gregory M Bazylak at 2:15 p.m. on January 5, on the following charges:

– Theft by Unlawful Taking-Movable Property, Misdemeanor 2
– Theft by Deception-False Impression, Misdemeanor 2

Unable to post $25,000.00 (10%) monetary bail, he was lodged in the Jefferson County Jail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. on February 11, with Judge Bazylak presiding.
