Brookville Teen Faces Charges for Taking Vehicle Without Permission Following Crash in Brookville

BROOKVILLE BOROUGH, Pa. (EYT) – A Brookville teen is facing criminal charges for taking a vehicle without the owner’s permission following a crash on Wednesday.

Court documents indicate the Brookville Borough Police Department filed criminal charges against 18-year-old James Michael Urban.

According to a criminal complaint, around 5:00 p.m. on December 16, Brookville Borough Police were dispatched to the scene of a one-vehicle accident in the area of 6th Street and Euclid Avenue.

At the scene, police found a white Kia sedan off to the side of the roadway in a ditch. Police then spoke with the driver of the vehicle, identified as James Urban, who reported he was unable to get up the hill on 6th Street, so he turned around, but then lost control and crashed into the ditch.

Urban’s passenger, a juvenile female, complained of neck pain, and Jefferson County EMS was then dispatched to the scene. The juvenile’s father later arrived at the scene and took the juvenile to be checked at Penn Highlands Brookville Emergency Room, and the EMS call was canceled.

The complaint notes that McPherson Towing was also dispatched to remove the vehicle, which had damage to the passenger side front wheel. The wheel was broken off of the ball joint, causing the vehicle to be completely disabled. There was also additional damage to the hood, front bumper, and corner panel.

The crash scene was cleared around 5:30 p.m.

Police then received a call from the vehicle owner around 7:12 p.m. The owner told police that she did not give Urban permission to be operating the vehicle and had specifically told him that he was not to drive the vehicle in the bad weather that day. The owner then requested to have charges filed against Urban for operating the vehicle without permission, according to the complaint.

Around 8:18 p.m., police spoke to Urban again. When asked about the incident, Urban stated he has had permission to operate the vehicle in the past to go to work but admitted that the owner told him not to drive it in the bad weather. He said he “thought it would be OK from how she said it,” the complaint indicates.

The following charges were filed against Urban through Magisterial District Judge Gregory M. Bazylak’s office on December 17:

– Unauthorized Use Motor/Other Vehicle, Misdemeanor 2
– Driving at Safe Speed, Summary

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on February 2, 2021, with Judge Bazylak presiding.
