Rick’s Racing Roundup: CJ Jones Wins at Thunder Mountain

With hot, humid weather greeting racers and fans this past weekend, Jack Sodeman Jr. captured a pair of points championships. (Photo of Matt Lux of Franklin, who scored his first win of the season on the final night of regular racing at Lernerville Speedway. Photo by Rick Rarer) The Ohio drivers started the weekend Friday by clinching his first-ever Lernerville Championship. On Saturday, Sodeman moved to Mercer Raceway Park where he not only captured his second championship of the weekend but also dominated the final sprint car feature of the season at the track for his ninth win of the year. It was Sodeman’s third career championship at Mercer and his second in a row. Better late than never had to be what Franklin’s Mat Lux was thinking as he dominated the final regular late model feature of the season at Lernerville Speedway Friday. While Lux enjoyed victory lane Russ King was crowned the late model champion joining his brother Rex King Jr., a former modified champion making them the first brothers to win track championships at Lernerville. Mat Williamson continued to make his three-hour drive down from Canada each Friday worthwhile as he won his third championship in four years with his big block modified. Corey McPherson closed out the final Fab 4 show of 2016 by continuing his phenomenal run with his fifth sportsman win of the season. He also was crowned track champion for the fourth time in the last five seasons. With regular weekly racing coming to a close a full slate of special shows will take center stage in the upcoming weeks. This weekend the World of Outlaws late models will return to Lernerville Speedway. The region’s top late models will battle it out this Friday and Saturday for the Working Man 50 Weekend. Thunder Mountain Speedway wrapped up their regular season this past Friday with CJ Jones winning his first feature of the season and taking his first points title in the 305 sprint car class. Thunder Mountain will sit idle until October when the track presents The Final Showdown, the last race of the season at the Brookville oval. Sharon Speedway saw a surprise winner return to victory lane this past Saturday. Once one of the top winners in the area, Kevin Bolland has struggled in recent years but Saturday he led every lap of the big block modified feature for his first win in over three years. The rescheduled appearance of the 410 sprint cars will highlight the card on Sept. 10 joining the final point race for the regular six classes as the track champions will be decided. Tri-City Raceway Park announced they have rescheduled the Mod Tour race that fell victim to rain. The big block modifieds will return to the Franklin oval on Sunday September 11th. Joining the big block modifieds on the card will be the RUSH crate late models and the Penn-Ohio Pro Stock Series. Racing action is slated for 4 p.m. in hopes to get fans home at an early hour with school back in.
