Charges Filed Against Area Man Accused of Not Returning Money for Services He Never Completed

JEFFERSON CO., Pa. (EYT) – Theft and related charges have been filed against an area man who is accused of failing to pay back money that he was given for services he failed to perform.

Court documents indicate the Sykesville Borough Police Department on Wednesday, October 6, filed criminal charges against 49-year-old Matthew I. Zunner, of DuBois.

According to a criminal complaint, Sykesville Police spoke with the owner of a known business in Sykesville (the victim) on September 1 regarding a deposit of $818.00 to Matthew I. Zunner for work to be done on one of the trucks the victim owns through his company.

The complaint states the victim reported he was to pay half upfront, which was the $818.00, and the other half when the work was completed, but Zunner never completed any of the work. He told police Zunner had written him a check for $818.00 to pay back the money, but the check then had a stop payment put on it, so the victim never received his money back from the services not rendered. He noted he was also charged another $15.00 service charge from his own bank, as well.

The victim told police he then had a phone conversation with Zunner in May of 2021 about the money, and Zunner stated he would get the victim a money order of $818.00. In August of 2021, the victim sent Zunner a certified letter, which included a copy of the check that was returned to the victim for non-payment. The letter also stated that if the victim did not receive the money he was owed, he would have no choice but to seek an alternative way to recoup the money, according to the complaint.

The following charges were filed against Zunner through Magisterial District Judge David B. Inzana’s office on Wednesday, October 6:

– Theft By Unlawful Taking-Movable Property, Misdemeanor 1
– Receiving Stolen Property, Misdemeanor 1
– Bad Checks, Misdemeanor 2

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 26, with Judge Inzana presiding.
