Clarion 16th of 17 Schools in PSAC Dixon Cup Standings for Top Athletic Program after Winter Season

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Clarion University Athletic Program ranks nearly at the bottom of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, at least according to the conference’s Dixon Cup Trophy Standings.

The trophy is awarded at the end of each academic year to the league’s most successful program based on conference playoff and/or regular-season finish. Standings are compiled based on an average score for all PSAC Championship sports each school sponsors. Equal to its total membership, each conference sport champion is awarded 18 points and a descending point value is given for respective place finishes. The second- through last-place values vary depending on the number of teams that sponsor the sport.

Clarion’s overall average score of 5.54 is 16th of the 17 schools in the PSAC with only Mansfield (3.00), which doesn’t even sponsor football, below the Golden Eagles.

The Golden Eagles are also 16th in both men’s overall average score (5.20) and women’s overall average score (5.79) leading again only Mansfield.

Clarion has seen an overhaul of some of its coaching staffs this year with at least three new assistant football coaches having been hired since the conclusion of the season and women’s soccer coach Sean Esterhuizen and men’s basketball coach Marcess Williams – along with assistant coach Al Moderjewski – not having contracts renewed.

So far, spring sports are a bit of a mixed bag with softball checking in at 0-23 but baseball coming in at a more respectable 11-12 through action Wednesday, March 27. Women’s track and field’s placing won’t be determined until May.
