Clarion Men’s Basketball Routs PSU-DuBois for 110-51 Victory

WilliamsA_02CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion men’s basketball team ran away with a wild one at Tippin Gymnasium on Wednesday, going off for a season-high 110 points as the Golden Eagles defeated Penn State-DuBois by a 110-51 score. The Golden Eagles improve to 8-6 overall on the season.

Fourteen different players saw the floor against the Nittany Lions and each one of them contributed at least a point as the Golden Eagles leapt out to a 50-27 lead on PSU-DuBois at the halftime break. Things continued from there as Clarion outscored them 60-24 in the second half, shooting 62.5 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes of action to wrap up the victory. The biggest difference was in the paint as Clarion outscored the Nittany Lions 68-18 around the rim and 26-7 in second chance points.

Rob Agurs scored a team-high 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field, posting his scoring line in just 15 minutes of action. Larry Johnson, Jr. scored 14 points and recorded eight rebounds, most among Clarion Starters, and De’Ondre Terrell was the third member of the starting five to score in double-digits with 13 points. Justin Grant came off the bench for 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Things didn’t start out in a blowout, though, as the game was just a two-possession one through the first seven minutes of action. BJ Andrews made it 16-7 on a transition layup at the 12:12 mark of action, and it became a double-digit game for good at the 7:53 mark on a fast break make from Agurs. RJ Laugand drained a three-pointer at the 4:16 mark to make it 40-20 and Johnson gave the Golden Eagles their largest lead of the half with a transition bucket at the 1:41 mark to make it 48-23. Tim Gill ripped in a bucket with 14 seconds left to cap the first half scoring, giving Clarion a 50-27 advantage at the half.

The second half opened with a monster 23-5 run by the Golden Eagles, who opened up a 73-32 advantage less than five minutes into the second half. Grant made it 75-34 with a drive and make at the 13:33 mark, and the lead jumped all the way to 50 points on a transition bucket from Dobbs that was sparked by a steal and kick ahead from Laugand.

The lead hovered around 50 points until blowing right past it at the 5:28 mark, when Johnson took a pass from Andrews and laid it in to make it 96-43. Akeem Williams threw down an alley-oop on a feed from Laugand at the 3:58 mark, pushing the Golden Eagles past the century mark and making it 101-46. Clarion cruised for the remainder of the half, taking a lead of 59 points on a make by Grant and leaving it there for the final 30 seconds.
