Clarion U.’s Stermel and Moyer Earn All-PSAC Honors in Women’s Soccer

CLARION, Pa. – The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference announced its women’s soccer all-conference teams on Thursday, with Clarion goalkeeper Brigid Stermel earning Western Division All-PSAC First Team honors and defender Alexis Moyer earning Western Division All-PSAC Second Team honors in 2019.

Stermel and Moyer are the first duo since Casey Harsch and Laurel Saussol in 2013 to earn all-conference honors.

“(Stermel) is a true leader on and off the field,” Clarion head coach Afrim Latifi said. “She played with a broken finger on one hand and injured her elbow and shoulder in the other (arm). Her hard work has paid off and I am proud to have coached for one year!”

Stermel started 15 games this past year, allowing just 18 goals in posting a 5-9-1 overall record. She ranked fourth in the conference in save percentage with a save percentage of .864, which is second in program history behind Krista Mosi and C.J. Gattens’ marks set in 2017 and 2002. She ranked second in the conference in saves per game with 7.60.

Stermel allowed just a minuscule total of 18 goals and finished with four shutouts, which tied for the second-best mark in program history.

Her second All-PSAC Honor in as many years, Latifi had nothing but praise for Moyer.

“Alexis is a player that will only continue to excel,” Latifi said. “There is no limit of what she can accomplish. She was a key player in almost every position on the field this year. She was a bit hard on herself this year, but still gave us 100 percent of what we asked her to do and it was a lot. That says a lot of what type of player she is. I’m excited to see her develop into something special in the next two years.”

Moyer a sophomore defender started all 18 games this past season, just one of three Golden Eagles to do so. A defensive force in the backend for the blue and gold all season, Moyer tallied over 1500 minutes played, which ranked second on the team. She ranked sixth on the team in shot percentage and third in assists on the year.
