Clarion U. Wrestling Team Hosts George Mason on Sunday

CLARION, Pa. – The Golden Eagle wrestling team will honor 5 seniors and former All-Americans on Sunday when the Golden Eagles host EWL opponent George Mason on January 18 at Waldo S. Tippin Gymnasium. Match time is set for
2pm.

The Clarion – George Mason match will be available on WCCR-FM – 92.7 for listeners in Clarion area, as well as on the internet on Redzonemdia.com with Rich Herman, Bob Bubb, and John Stroup calling the action.

Seniors honored in pre-match ceremonies include Sam Sherlock (141- West Mifflin), Kyle Braddock (165- Beaver Falls/Blackhawk), Daniel Sutherland
(184- N. Bellmore, N.Y.), Ryan Darch (197- Batavia, N.Y.) and Victor
LiPari (125- Canonsburg/Chartiers Houston).

Sherlock, who transferred to Clarion from Penn state in 2012, has a career record of 38-38. Sam is 7-13 this year at 141-pounds, while he
was 18-14 in 2014 at 133-pounds placing 2nd at PSAC’s and 3rd at EWL’s,
and was 13-11 in 2013 placing 2nd at PSAC’s and 3rd at EWL’s at
141-pounds.

Braddock, voted the team’s captain for the 2015 season, has put together a 3-11 mark at 165-pounds this season. He was 1-8 in 2014, 2-9 at 157 in 2013 and 2-14 at 157 in 2011.

Sutherland, came to Clarion from Nassau Community College and posted a 4-17 record in 2014 wrestling at 197-pounds. He was 6th at EWL’s last
year. This season he dropped to 184 pounds and placed 5th at PSAC’s
while posting a record of 13-14.

Darch, a 4-year starter at Clarion, moved up to 197-pounds this season and is 12-10 overall and placed 3rd at PSAC’s. Prior to this season he
has wrestle at 174 and was 16-22 in 2014 placing 4th at EWL’s and 5th at
PSAC’s, 12-16 in 2013 placing 3rd at EWL’s and 2nd at PSAC’s and also
8-12 in 2012 while taking 4th at PSAC’s. He has a career record of
48-60.

LiPari, who has had some injuries through his career, is not wrestling this season but dedicated to helping the program. A 125-pounder in his career he was 4-7 in 2012, and 0-3 in 2014.

Clarion, under head coach Keith Ferraro, enters the match with a 1-10 dual meet record against a very tough schedule. Last Saturday the Golden Eagles dropped a 34-7 decision to Eastern Michigan, while also losing in January to #28 Ohio University 42-5. On December 19 Clarion posted its first dual meet victory under coach Ferraro with an exciting 20-19 criteria win over EWL and PSAC rival Bloomsburg at Waldo S. Tippin Gym.

The Golden Eagles opened the 2014-15 wrestling season hosting the Clarion Open on November 2 with three Clarion wrestlers in Saturday’s lineup earning places including Daniel Sutherland (3rd at 174), Michael Pavasko (4th at 174) and Evan DeLong (4th at 157). On November 15 Clarion participated in the Eastern Michigan duals and lost four dual matches to Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (19-12), #19 Northwestern (39-6). Central Michigan (34-6) and Northern Illinois (31-7). Then on November 22, Clarion hosted four-time and defending NCAA D-I National Champion #4 Penn State at Tippin Gym and lost a 44-0 decision in front of 2,875 fans. On November 30 the Golden Eagles traveled to #17 Rider and lost a 38-3 decision to the Broncs and a 25-13 loss to Penn.

Clarion placed 5th at the PSAC Championships on December 6th at Bloomsburg with Evan Daley finishing second and Slade Horner, Mike Pavasko and Ryan Darch finishing third, while losing a week later at #10 ranked Edinboro 32-6.

133; Sam Sherlock (7-13; Sr. West Mifflin) or John Pezze (2-14 ; Jr. N.
Huntingdon/Norwin) at 141; Brodie Zacherl (13-15; Fr. Brookville, Pa.)
at 149; Evan DeLong (11-16; Fr. Kane) at 157; Kyle Bradock (3-11; Sr.
Beaver Falls/Blackhawk) or Slade Horner (12-8; Jr. Ridgway) at 165;
Michael Pavasko (15-10; Jr. Munhall/Steel Valley) at 174; Daniel
Sutherland (13-14; Sr. N. Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) at 184, Ryan Darch
(12-10; Sr. Batavia, N.Y.) at 197 and Evan Daley (11-7; So. Erie/Fort
LeBoeuf) or Joshua Davis (5-7; Jr. Freehold, N.J.) at 285.

George Mason, led by ninth year head coach Joe Russell, has a dual meet record of 5-4, before traveling to Bucknell on Saturday, and then to
Clarion on Sunday. The Patriots feature wins over VMI (25-6), Anderson
(35-6), Maryland (17-16), F&M (28-10) and Cleveland State (19-12).
Losses were to Virginia (34-6), Navy (23-9), Duke (24-9) and Drexel
(25-11).

The GMU lineup will likely have Ibrahim Bunduka (3-10) at 125, Vince Rodriguez (8-7) at 133, Sahid Kargbo (7-7) at 141, Konbeh Koromoa (8-7)
at 149, Greg Flournoy (13-7) at 157, Patrick Davis (4-6) at 165, Ryan
Forrest (6-7) at 174, Ryan Hembury (0-5) at 184, Matt Meadows (7-8) at
197 and Jake Kettler (16-7) at 285.

CLARION NOTES: There will be a halftime break during the George Mason match – Clarion’s previous all-time All-Americans have been invited to attend and will be introduced at halftime… Clarion owns a 1-0 series history against George Mason — 2014 was the first meeting between the
two schools…
