Clarion University Wrestling Competes at Lock Haven Classic

delucaLOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Dom Rigous and Zach DeLuca each reached the semifinal round of their respective brackets as the Clarion wrestling team concluded its day at the Lock Haven Classic on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles will be back in dual meet action on Saturday, January 16 when they take on Ohio.

Rigous and DeLuca advanced to the final fours of the 184 and 285 brackets, respectively, with DeLuca winning two matches to reach that point and Rigous one. DeLuca started his day with a decision over Indiana (Pa.)’s Garret Goldman, winning 6-2. He scored a bit win by fall over Kent State’s Devin Nye in the quarterfinal round, pinning his opponent just three seconds before the end of the first period to advance.

DeLuca fell in a major decision to eventual heavyweight champion Joe Stolfi of Bucknell but moved to the consolation semifinal. There he fell in a tight decision to George Mason’s Matt Voss, dropping a 9- decision.

Rigous had a bye in the opening two rounds of the 184 bracket to move directly to the quarterfinal round. He defeated Indiana’s Matt Irick in an exciting sudden victory bout, winning 4-2 in the extra session to move to the semifinal round. Rigous fell in the semifinal round, dropping a decision to eventual champion Tom Sleigh of Bucknell.

Elsewhere on the mats, Jake Keller reached the quarterfinal round of the 149 bracket, winning in a major decision over Bucknell’s Christian Bassolino. Though both grapplers had byes to the second round, Keller was the one ready to wrestle, claiming a 15-1 major decision to move to the quarterfinals where he fell to eventual champion Dan Neff of Lock Haven.

Roshaun Cooley won a pair of matches in the 133 consolation bracket, claiming a technical fall over Hofstra’s Marcus Begaly at 17-0 and a 6-4 decision over Kent State’s Del Vinas in the consolation quarterfinal. Slade Horner advanced to the 174 consolation semifinal, starting with a 6-0 decision over Bucknell’s Chad Reese. He claimed a win by fall over Indiana’s Wyatt Wilson and then reached the round of four with a 7-0 decision over Kent State’s Mike Vollant.
