Clarion University’s Horner and Zacherl Earn Awards

horner, brock zacherl icsCLARION, Pa. – Clarion wrestlers Slade Horner (Jr. Ridgway) and Brock Zacherl (Fr. Brookville) were honored today with wrestling awards from over the weekend.

Horner, a junior, 165-pound wrestler, was named the PSAC “Wrestler of the Week” for going 2-0 over the weekend at Rider.

Zacherl, who is red-shirting this year and wrestling unattached, was named the EWL “Freshman of the Week” for winning the 141-pound title at Mat-Town.

Horner raised his season record to 7-6 overall on Sunday with a 3-0 win over rider’s Andrew Reca, then came back with a strong performance in his 13-0 major decision win over Quinton Hiles of Penn.

In the win over Reca, Horner had a second period escape and takedown to win 3-0. In his 13-0 major decision over Hiles, Horner was leading 2-0 entering the second period when he scored an escape, takedown, three-point and two-point near falls to go ahead 10-0. A third period takedown and riding time gave him the victory.

He is the son of Ed and Roxanne Horner and is an Engineering major at Clarion.

Brock Zacherl wrestled unattached at Lock Haven’s Mat Town Open on Sunday. Zacherl opened with a 17-1 tech fall followed by a 10-3 decision. In the semi finals he scored a 9-4 win, then decisioned two-time EWL place winner, Bobby Rehm of Lock Haven University, in the championship finals 9-4.

Zacherl has won at Mat-Town, plus has placed second at the Clarion Open, EMU Open and at the Mercyhurst Open already this season.

The son of Emily and Lou Zacherl, Brock is a Business major at Clarion. His brother Brodie is also on the team.

CLARION NOTES: Clarion’s next action will be on Saturday when the Golden Eagles travel to Bloomsburg to participate in the PSAC Championships starting at 9a.m.
