Clarion University Wrestlers Travel to Bucknell on Saturday

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The 2014 Clarion University wrestling team heads back out on the road on Saturday, January 18, when the Golden Eagles travel to Lewisburg, Pa. to take on Brown and host Bucknell in NCAA Division I dual meet competition.

Held at Bucknell’s Davis Gymnasium, Clarion will wrestle Brown University at approximately 1pm and the match against Bucknell will immediately follow (approx. 3pm).

The Clarion – Brown match can be heard live on the radio on WCCR-FM, 92.7 in Clarion, as well as on the internet at redzonemedia.com, with Rich Herman calling the action. The Clarion – Brown match follows Bucknell versus Brown – which is set to start at 11am. The Clarion – Brown dual will start 15 minutes following the conclusion of the first match – or approximately at 1pm.

Clarion, under second year head coach Troy Letters, enters the dual meet with a 5-9 overall record. The extremely young Golden Eagles, who have six freshmen in their lineup, opened the season with a 2-2 mark at the Eastern Michigan duals having defeated Campbellsville (34-3) and Tiffin (43-6), while losing to Northern Illinois (21-15) and EMU 26-15. The home dual season opened on Nov. 22nd with a 30-12 loss to Rutgers, then at the Journeyman Northeast Duals Clarion lost a 21-13 decision to #11 Virginia and rebounded for wins against Columbia (20-16) and Buffalo (34-7). On December 7th Clarion was fourth at the PSAC Championships, while on December 15 Clarion lost the EWL opener to Edinboro (40-3) and on Dec. 21 lost to #25 Rider (21-16). Last Sunday Clarion as 1-3 at the Pitt duals, defeating Davidson 31-15 and losing to North Carolina State (30-6), Duke (28-9) and North Carolina (32-4).

Clarion’s lineup will likely have either Jonathan Mele (11-10, Fr. Berkely Hts., N.J.) or Hunter Jones (1-3, Fr. New Rochelle, N.Y.) at 125, Sam Sherlock (13-9; Jr. West Mifflin) at 133, John Pezze (2-6; So. N. Huntingdon/Norwin) or Tyler Bedelyon (7-12; Sr. Lewistown) at 141, Justin Arthur (18-7; Fr. Huntington, W.V.) at 149; Austin Matthews (13-4; Fr. Greenville/Reynolds) at 157; Michael Pavasko (11-12; Fr. Munhall/Steel Valley) or Steven Nelson (5-6; Fr. Haddonfield, N.J.) at 165; Ryan Darch (11-13; Jr. Batavia, N.Y.) at 174; Dustin Conti (5-11; Fr. Jefferson/Jeffrerson Morgan) at 184, Daniel Sutherland (4-8; Jr. North Bellmore, N.y.) or Brandon Contreras (5-11; Sr. Rochester, N.Y.) at 197 and Evan Daley (13-8; Fr. Erie/Fort LeBoeuf) at 285.

Brown, led by first year head coach Todd Beckerman, enters Saturday with a dual record of 0-3. The Bears have lost to Army (28-12), Binghamton (23-17) and American (31-13). The Brown lineup will ikely have Vincent Moita (13-12) at 125, Anthony Finocchiaro (12-8) at 133, Zachary Tanenbaum (4-5) at 141, Cortland Choate (10-9) at 149, Justin Staudenmayer (12-7) at 157, Philip Marano (11-7) at 165, Ricky McDonald (10-9) at 174, #9 ranked Ophir Bernstein (21-7) at 184, Sebastien Levin (9-8) or Augustus Marker (9-11) at 197 with one of those wrestlers competing at heavyweight.

Bucknell, led by ninth year head coach Dan Wirnsberger, enters the dual with a record of 3-6 overall and 1-0 in the EIWA. The Bison opened the season with a 50-0 win over Shippensburg, lost 19-13 at Lock Haven, defeated highly regarded Lehigh 18-17, lost 40-6 to Oklahoma State and 38-6 to Oklahoma, and then lost 30-12 to Pittsburgh. At the Virginia Duals the Bison lost 24-11 to Bloomsburg, 19-18 to the Citadel and defeated George Mason 27-9.

The Bucknell lineup will likely have Paul Petrov (17-6) at 125, Grim Gonzalez (12-15) at 133, Connor Lapresi (9-13) at 141, Victor Lopez (12-13) at 149, Logan Kerin (5-15) or Ray Schlitt (13-12) at 157, Rustin Barrick (11-13) or Robert Schlitt (11-8) at 165, Joey Krulock (6-9) a t174, Rory Bonner (6-9) at 184, Tyler Lyster (11-11) a t197 and #19 ranked Joe Stolfi (17-6) at 285.

CLARION NOTES: Clarion is 2-0 against Bucknell – defeating the Bison 25-16 at Tippin Gym last year … and also by a 32-7 score in the 1992 season … This will be the first ever meeting between Clarion and Brown…. The Golden Eagles return to Tippin Gym on Friday, Jan. 31 when Clarion hosts rival Lock Haven at 7pm… #5 ranked Oklahoma State comes to Clarion on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 1pm.
