Clarion’s Schaffer Wins PSAC Women’s “Swimmer of the Week”

SchafferLOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Clarion junior backstroke specialist Gabriella Schaffer (Reading/Muhlenberg) was named today as the PSAC Women’s ”Swimmer of the Week” after her outstanding performance at the Pitt Invitational last Saturday.

Schaffer won the 200 backstroke at the Pitt Invitational with a time of 2:06.01, besting Duquesne’s Abby Watson who touched the wall at 2:06.37. She also topped swimmers from Pitt, Carnegie Mellon and California.-Pa.

“Gabby” was also part of the 4th place 200 medley relay with a time of 1:49.57. Teams were allowed to submit multiple team entries, thus the placing was impressive.

“Congratulations to Gabriella on her PSAC award,” said veteran clarion head coach Mark VanDyke. “She has had a great career here at Clarion and sets a high standard of excellence every time she hits the water. We are proud to have her in blue and gold.”

A Mid-Level Math Education major, Schaffer is the daughter of Rodney and Lisa Schaffer.

CLARION NOTES: Schaffer has the top ranked times in the PSAC this season in the 100 backstroke (55.18) and the 200 backstroke (2:03.22) … A 4-time NCAA D-II All-American, she set the Clarion record in the 200 back at nationals last year with a time of 2:01.81 … She was 15th in the 200 back and 12th in the 100 back with a time of 56.47.
