Community Members Band Together to Help Family of Local Boy Injured in Freak Accident

CLARION CO., Pa. (EYT) – Community members banded together Saturday to help a local family in need.

12-year-old Seth Apel, of Knox, is recovering after losing his arm in a freak accident while he was helping his dad and brothers cut firewood.

The accident happened on November 7, when Seth, son of Angela and Josh Apel, went to unload a pile of wood from the tractor and got his sleeve caught in a piece of equipment.

Fortunately, Seth was flown to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh where doctors re-attached the injured arm in an eight-hour surgery. Doctors now say he is stable and his prognosis is day-to-day.

On Saturday, exactly one week after the accident, over 100 people gathered at the Apel’s Knox home to help the family cut firewood for the winter.

Knox resident Jason Say, one of the volunteers on hand, said it’s heart-warming to see the community come together to help the Apels.

“At the end of the day, I do believe our community is the very best, and I am proud to be a part of it,” said Say.

Angela Apel thanked volunteers for their support on what she referred to as an “amazing day.”

“So many of you sacrificed to be at our home and give of yourselves on our behalf. I have no words,” said Angela Apel. “What I witnessed today was simply beautiful.”
