CUP Weekend Roundup: Baseball Goes 1-1

Clarion U Baseball
WILSON, N.C. – The Clarion University baseball team was defeated by a final score of 7-1 against Fairmont State Sunday afternoon at Fleming Stadium in Wilson, N.C.

The loss moves the Golden Eagles to 2-3 on the season. The Blue and Gold will return to action tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader against Fairmont and Kutztown University.

Clarion struck the first blow Sunday afternoon against FSU when Joe Lopez singled to left and eventually scored off of a John Finke sacrifice fly two batters later to give CU a 1-0 lead. Although it would threaten to add to their lead for the remainder of the game, the first run would end up becoming Clarion’s only one.

Lopez and Tyler Falk both managed singles in the top of the third, however, they would end up stranded as an unassisted put-out by Fairmont third basemen Dorian Hetzel killed Clarion’s rally before it could get going. The fifth inning proved to follow a similar storyline, as Falk hit a screaming line drive down the right-field line directly at Fairmont right fielder Ben Meyers that ended the inning and prevented Mitch Holmberg from scoring from third.

On the flip side, FSU did most of their damage in the bottom of the fourth, taking advantage of a pair of Clarion errors in the field that put men on the bases before first-basemen Fraser Brown smoked a three-run homer over the right-field wall that put the game out of reach for the Blue and Gold.

On Saturday, the Clarion University baseball team defeated Kutztown University Saturday evening by a final score of 10-7 at Fleming Stadium.

Clarion managed to strike first in this one after a John Finke single drove home Tyler Falk from second base to put the Golden Eagles up 1-0 in the bottom of the first. The Blue and Gold managed to tack on a few more in the bottom of the third when Falk crushed a towering double to the center field wall that drove in Joe Lopez and Mitch Holmberg to make it 3-0.

The Golden Bears would strike back, however, earning a run off of starting pitcher Kane McCall in the top of the fourth when Alec O’dell reached on a single and eventually scored on a fielder’s choice. They would add runs in the fourth and fifth to draw even at three apiece.

Clarion managed to blow the game wide open in the seventh thanks to some heads-up base running by and a number of unfortunate errors by the Golden Bears. Dillon Wolbert took home on a wild pitch with the bases loaded, and two batters later Tyler Falk was intentionally walked to juice the bases again. Another walk, this one unintentional, scored Holmberg.

A Garrett Goslaw single drove in the final pair of runs before Jay Moog would take the mound to close things out and secure the win.

TENNIS FALLS

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Clarion women’s tennis team rallied to split singles play, but the Golden Eagles dropped their first dual of the spring semester with a 6-3 loss to Shepherd in Hilton Head Island on Sunday. The Golden Eagles (3-2) will be back in action later this week against Lenoir-Rhyne.

After a difficult start to the morning, the Golden Eagles fought back against the Rams to split the six singles matches on the courts. The top of the Clarion lineup gave the Rams fits throughout the day, with Alivia Arnold and Maria Snyder each winning their singles matches and also pushing Shepherd’s top doubles pair to a tiebreaker.

Arnold and Snyder also claimed their decisions by identical scores. Snyder won the No. 2 singles match by a 6-1, 6-4 score over Molly Lovein, while Arnold defeated Alisha Adkins by a 6-1, 6-4 score in the No. 1 singles match.

Rounding out the wins for Clarion on Sunday was Katie Benson, who rallied from a one-set deficit to win a super tiebreaker against Olivia Scott in No. 6 singles. Benson dropped the first set 6-1 but then dominated the second to the tune of a 6-2 score. She then outpaced Scott 10-5 in the pro set to take the win.
