CUP Wrestling Wins Third Straight

Rigous
CLARION, Pa. – The Clarion wrestling team won its third straight dual match with a sound effort on Friday, earning their first Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) match of the season with a 24-10 victory over George Mason.

The Golden Eagles (4-6, 1-2 EWL) will be back in action on Sunday against Michigan State in Merwick-Boyd.

The Golden Eagles won seven of the 10 bouts on the mat on Friday, finally clinching the team bout when Scott Marmoll won the 184-pound bout over Austin Harrison. The match was truly put out of reach one bout earlier, though, with Dom Rigous notching his fifth pin of the season to bump Clarion’s lead to 18-7.

Jake Gromacki opened the match with an impressive decision in the 125-pound bout, taking advantage of a miscue by Ibrahim Bunduka for the win. With the bout scoreless to start the second period and Bunduka in the down position, Gromacki caught his opponent in a cradle for a four-point near-fall. Gromacki rode Bunduka out through the period and deftly handled him in the third for the 6-0 win. That was followed up by another win, with Roshaun Cooley impressively working Lio Quezada for a 7-3 decision. The third straight win came from Brock Zacherl, who held off Tejon Anthony for a decision to give Clarion a 9-0 match lead.

George Mason won two straight matches, including a major decision and a sudden victory, to pull within 9-7, but Evan Delong righted the ship at 165 pounds. Facing off with Ryan Forrest and with the score tied 4-4 late in the third period, Delong brought his opponent down with a double leg takedown to pull ahead 6-4, and successfully held Forrest off for the victory.

The highlight of the night came from Rigous, who shoved the dagger into the Patriots with a win by fall. RIgous led 5-0 early in the second period when he brought Daniel Mika down and cradled him for the pin, giving Clarion an 18-7 advantage. Marmoll officially clinched the match with an 8-2 decision over Austin Harrison, and Dustin Conti scored the last win of the night with a 5-3 decision at 197 pounds.
