Curve Go Deep Three Times in Win Over Erie

CURVE, Pa. – The Altoona Curve crushed three home runs and Edwin Espinal fell a triple short of the cycle in a 9-5 victory over the Erie SeaWolves on Tuesday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field.

Espinal led the offensive charge for the Curve (9-10), going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Four other Curve players logged two-hit nights in what was a 13-hit output for Altoona. Jose Osuna and Eric Wood also homered in the game for the Curve.

The Curve took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth against Erie reliever Santiago Garrido (Loss, 0-1) with a three-run frame and RBI knocks from Jin-De Jhang, Espinal and Wood, to go up 8-5, a lead they would not let go. The Curve added an insurance run in the fifth on a Osuna single, scoring Austin Meadows, to take a 9-5 lead.

Erie opened the scoring with a pair of runs against Altoona starter Cody Dickson in the top of the second, but the Curve answered in the bottom half with home runs from Espinal and Wood to tie the game at 2-2.

Osuna gave the Curve their first lead of the game in the third inning with a two-run blast, scoring Anderson Feliz, to take a 5-2 lead. Espinal’s two-out double knocked Erie starter Brennan Smith out of the game after just 2.1 completed innings. Smith finished the night allowing five runs on six hits.

Dickson completed four innings of work but could not record an out after two batters in the fifth, leaving after five runs on a career-high-tying 10 hits. Frank Duncan (Win, 2-0) tossed five shutout innings in relief, scattering just three hits and recording three strikeouts. Duncan retired 12 of the final 14 batters he faced.

Altoona and Erie will play the rubber match of the three-game set, as the Curve bring their seven-game homestand to a close beginning at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Right-hander David Whitehead (1-1, 3.21) aims for his second win of the season, while Erie righty Lucas Harrell (1-0, 1.80) does the same.
