D9Sports.com Boys’ High School Basketball Recaps: Big Third Quarter Lifts ECC Past Punxsy

ELK COUNTY CATHOLIC 63, PUNXSUTAWNEY 49

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. – A 10-point third-quarter advantage helped Elk County Catholic shake off a poor second quarter and gain a 63-49 D9 League win at Punxsutawney Wednesday night.

The Crusaders, who led 21-12 at the end of the first quarter, found that lead cut to three, 25-22, at halftime before outscoring the Chucks 21-11 in the third quarter and 38-27 in the second half.

Gabe Kraus was a big reason for the second-half surge scoring 17 of his game-high 20 points after intermission including 11 in the third quarter when he hit three 3-pointers. He had six triples in the game.

Nate DaCanal added 17 point for ECC with Kyle Huff chipping in with 14.

Dylan Huey paced Punxsutawney with 16 points and Brandon Matthews had 11.

ST. MARYS 62, DUBOIS 56

DUBOIS, Pa. – Parker Housler netted a game-high 25 points to lead St. Marys past DuBois, 62-56, in D9 League action Wednesday at DuBois.

Jeff Wehler chipped in 18 points for the Dutch, who avenged an early-season loss at the Keystone Tip-off Tournament to the Beavers.

Nick LaBrasca led DuBois with 21 points. Zach Sloan added 15 and John Oberlin 10.

The teams were tied at 11 at the end of the first quarter before St. Marys outscored the Beavers 18-11 in the second quarter thanks to eight points from Housler, who hit a pair of threes in the quarter, and six from Wehler on two 3-pointers. Both Housler and Wehler nailed five threes apiece in the game helping St. Marys knock down 11 long-range bombs.

DUBOIS CENTRAL CATHOLIC 56, KANE 45

DUBOIS, Pa. – Behind the play of freshman Justin Miknis and senior Christian LaParne, DuBois Central Catholic outscored Kane 23-10 in the fourth quarter to claim a come-from-behind 56-45 win over the visiting Wolves Wednesday in AML action.

The Cardinals trailed 35-33 going to the fourth quarter before Miknis exploded for 12 of his career high 28 points, his second straight 20-point outing, and LaParne added nine of his 11 points.

Thomas Grecco added eight points for DCC, which led 26-23 at the half before falling behind after three.

Andrew Bucheit paced Kane with 12 points, and Davis Gardner added eight for the Wolves.
