Details of Heroin, Meth Bust in Brookville Unfold; $11K in Drugs Seized

BROOKVILLE BOROUGH, Pa. (EYT) – The details of an investigation that ended in the seizure of $11,000.00 in heroin and methamphetamine in Brookville have been released.

According to court documents, the Brookville Borough Police Department filed the following criminal charges against 29-year-old Matthew John Meholic, of DuBois:

– Manufacture, Delivery, or Possession With Intent to Manufacture or Deliver, Felony (13 counts)
– Intentional Possession Controlled Substance By Person Not Registered, Misdemeanor (13 counts)
– Use/Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Misdemeanor (4 counts)

The charges stem from an investigation into a tip from an Elk County Overdose Task Force officer.

According to a criminal complaint, around noon on Thursday, January 16, Officer Stormer, of the Brookville Borough Police Department, was contacted by a detective who was working with an Elk County Overdose Task Force. The detective reported a suspected drug dealer was possibly at the Brookville Super 8 Motel on Allegheny Boulevard and provided Officer Stormer with the name of the suspect, Matthew John Meholic.

Officer Stormer spoke to an employee at the hotel who verified that Meholic had checked in on January 15 and had a female with him. The vehicle license plate information Meholic provided to the hotel came back to a known St. Mary’s man, and the vehicle was not at the motel when police arrived.

Officer Stormer later received a call from another officer on the task force who stated it was believed Meholic and the female were in Pittsburgh getting more heroin and would probably be returning to the motel in Brookville.

It was determined that Brookville Borough Police would patrol the area and further investigate the situation.

Around 11:53 p.m., Officer Miller was asked to contact Jefferson County 9-1-1, who then advised Miller they received a call from an individual at the motel who stated the people the officers were looking for were there and provided a room number.

Officer Miller arrived at the scene around 12:03 a.m. and spoke to two individuals at the motel who advised that Meholic had arrived at the motel around 11:00 p.m., by himself, with a large duffel bag that he had not previously had with him.

One individual told police that Meholic had initially arrived by himself the previous night but entered the room with another male. He also reported that as soon as the two men arrived, a black truck pulled into the parking lot, and two other males also went in the room, and there was foot traffic in and out of the room through most of the night.

According to the complaint, the second individual stated that Meholic had previously rented a room between December 15, 2019, and December 26, 2019, and a large amount of cash had been seen in the room.

The complaint notes a background check on Meholic found that he was on active probation through Elk County, as well as supervision by Clearfield County probation. Chief Vince Markle then contacted Clearfield County Probation and spoke to an officer who determined Meholic violated his terms of probation by not reporting his location out of county.

According to the complaint, the probation officer then responded to the motel and knocked on the door of the room Meholic had rented. A male voice answered, and the officer asked for “Matt.” A white male then opened the door, and the officer identified himself and asked if the man was Meholic, to which the man replied he was. The officer then entered the room to speak to Meholic and saw, in plain view on a night stand, several small packages of suspected controlled substances. The officer then requested assistance from Brookville Borough Police Department.

Meholic was detained by officers, and a search for weapons discovered he had numerous syringes, methamphetamine, and $2,370.00 in cash, which were seized as evidence.

When Meholic was asked if he was in possession of any other controlled substances, he said he had the heroin on the stand, as well as eleven more bricks of heroin hidden inside a coffee maker. Officer Stormer then opened the coffee maker and confirmed the bricks of heroin inside, the complaint states.

A total of 650 doses of heroin were seized from the coffee maker. Police also found a glass smoking pipe laying on the bed in plain view, according to the complaint.

All of the items were then seized and packaged as evidence, and Meholic was taken into custody.

He was arraigned in front of Magisterial District Judge Gregory M. Bazylak at 9:10 a.m. on Friday, January 17.

Unable to post $30,000.00 monetary bail, he was lodged in the Jefferson County Jail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, February 4, with Judge Bazylak presiding.
