District Wrestling Roundup Powered by Luton’s Plumbing & Heating

District 9 teams wrestled 13 dual meets last week with only five having two scheduled.

Of those five, Redbank Valley was the sole team to go 2-0, downing Brockway, 35-28, on Tuesday, Jan. 15 and Ridgway on Thursday, Jan. 17.

The Bulldogs won seven of the 13 contested bouts against the Rovers clinching the match-up of potential team-tournament contenders when Kobe Bonnano decisioned Hayden Thompson 2-1 in the penultimate pairing of the evening.

Redbank Valley swamped host Ridgway, 74-3, in a match which was remarkable for having only three contested bouts, two of which were won by the Bulldogs.

Brockway also fell to Mercer out of District 10 on Thursday, 36-27. The Rovers won five of 11 bouts, four by pin, but were undone by having two forfeits coupled with two Mustang pins and four decisions.

Curwensville and St. Marys were both 1-1 last week. Curwensville got its win in a rare Monday (Jan. 14) match, narrowly downing Punxsutawney 36-35. Though the Chucks took four of the six contested bouts, the two forfeits they gave to the Golden Tide were simply too much to overcome.

Curwensville fell to St. Marys on Thursday, 48-15, as the Dutchmen took four of the six contested bouts and benefitted from five Golden Tide forfeits. The win represented a rebound for St. Marys, who, despite halving 10 bouts with Brookville, fell victim to Raider bonus points and surrendering four forfeits in a 50-18 loss.

Punxsutawney was beaten Clarion later in the week (Thursday), the second loss in four days for the Chucks and the Bobcats second win of the 2018-2019 campaign. Though each team gave up three forfeits, the Bobcats won four of five bouts, three by bonus points, in the victory.

Coudersport, Port Allegany, Kane and Dubois each won their only matches of the week.

Coudy knocked off Oswayo Valley, 24-37, (Jan. 15), Port Allegany beat Sheffield, 60-23, (Jan. 15), Kane took down Bradford, 48-7, (Jan. 15), and Dubois edged Hollidaysburg, 45-31.

Cranberry and Clearfield both lost Jan. 15 matches.

Cranberry fell to Warren 40-24 in the only match involving a District 9 team in which all 14 bouts were wrestled. Penns Valley bumped off Clearfield, 44-26.

Winter Storm Harper (or the threat of) wreaked havoc on the weekend tournament schedule.

Brookville canceled the Ultimate Duals; Clearfield postponed the Bison Duals until February 9; Coudersport, Bradford and Sheffield withdrew from the Mercer VFW Wrestling Tournament and Cranberry did not make it to the Howland Invitational.

The schedule ahead the remainder of this week sees Kane at Ridgway on Wednesday, Jan. 23, while Punxsutawney makes the trip to Hollidaysburg. Bradford hosts Cameron County Thursday, Jan. 24, Brookville at DuBois Thursday, Johnsonburg at Port Allegany Thursday and Redbank Valley at Coudersport Thursday.

Matches on Tuesday (Jan 22) also include Clearfield at home against Central-Martinsburg and Oswayo Valley at Wellsville (NY).

Kane is at Ridgway on Wednesday, Jan. 23, while Punxsutawney makes the trip to Hollidaysburg.

There are two major individual tournaments taking place this weekend (Jan 25-26).

Bradford, Brockway, Clearfield, Johnsonburg, Oswayo Valley and Ridgway will be at the Ultimate Warrior Tournament in West Branch. Participating in the Fred Bell Memorial Tournament at Grove City will be Clarion, Cranberry, Curwensville, Kane and St. Marys.

This weekend is also the deadline for teams to enter the District 9 team tournament, which gets underway next week.
