Donald George Ross

Donald George Ross, 77, of Punxsutawney, died Thursday, Aug. 13, 2015, at home, surrounded by his family.

He was born on Feb. 10, 1938, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Robert Ross and Mary Jane (Speno) Ross.

Donald was Catholic, having been a member of Ss. Cosmas and Damian Church in Punxsutawney all of his life.

On Jan. 10, 1958, he married Consetta “Connie” Mondi, his wonderful wife of 57 years, having met her at The Skate Haven in Punxsutawney, where they enjoyed roller skating and went to numerous skating competitions, winning many metals and trophies.

Mr. Ross was employed by Loree Footwear for 15 years, then PennDOT for 24 years. After that, he and his wife owned and operated Ross & Sons Pools for 32 years.

They always said to their customers, “Come as a stranger, leave as a friend,” which was so true.

He was a member of the Lindsey Fire Company, serving the community for 52 years, during which time Don was one of the founders of one of the Scuba Rescue Teams.

Don was a devoted family man. He loved spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his two puppies, Snow and Tiny. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife in their RV to the many pool shows and meeting new pool dealers.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Don Ross and wife Mary of Punxsutawney and Tony Ross and wife Danielle of Walston; three grandchildren, Shana Garner and husband Ed, Donald Ross Jr. and wife Emily and Ellie Ross; three great-grandchildren, Layla and Mack Garner and Kiera Ross; a sister, Jean (Tootsie) Frerotte of Ford City; a brother, Robert Ross and wife Mary of California; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, twin Mamie Bianco and Kay (Honey) Kyser.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2015, at the Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.

A funeral mass will be held on Monday, Aug. 17, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Ss. Cosmas and Damian Church, Punxsutawney, celebrated by Monsignor Joseph Riccardo.

Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Punxsutawney.

In lieu of flowers, Don requested that donations be made to the Lindsey Fire Hall, Ss. Cosmas and Damian Church or the Humane Society.
