Doris May (Hamler) Smith

Doris SmithDoris May (Hamler) Smith, age 83, of Brookville PA, passed away peacefully with her son by her side on Saturday, February 11, 2017, as a resident of the McKinley Health Center in Brookville, PA.

Doris was born on December 11, 1933, to the late Wilbur T. and Pauline T. (McKinley) Hamler in Rossiter, PA.

She attended and graduated from the Summerville – Red Bank School District with the class of 1951.

Shortly after her graduation she began working at Dan Smith’s Candy and then moved into working at Sylvania in Brookville PA.

She stayed with Sylvania until they closed their doors, at that point she began working for the Riverside Grocery Store in their bakery department.

She loved this job and stayed with them until she retired in 1996.

On July 12, 1951, she married Raymond L. Smith while he was serving in the United States Military; Ray survives her.

Doris loved being with her family and dedicated her life to taking care of her two boys and husband.

She and her four sisters made up the “Snoop Sisters” as they were known around the area. They did and continue to do everything together, with Doris’ passing the Snoop Sisters now consist of two.

Doris loved picnics and she would host large family get-togethers at her home.

She loved taking the family to the Clarion River where they would eat, boat, swim, and water-ski.

In her younger years she loved music and together with her sister would play, bringing joy to themselves and others.

She made baking into a career and even when she retired she continued to use her skills baking, canning, and cooking for her family.

She liked to watch Jeopardy and she loved reading her Bible.

She was a member of the Roseville Church of Christ in Roseville, PA.

Doris did many things in her life and she always worked hard. Her family and home-life was most important to her and those values she instilled in her posterity will continue on for generations.

In addition to her husband, Doris is survived by 2 sons; Jeff R. Smith, and Benjy T. (Autumn) Smith; 2 sisters; Alma Neel and Phyllis Ankeny; 2 grandsons; Justin R. Smith and Austin J. Smith; and 1 granddaughter; Chloe Smith.

In addition to her parents, Doris is preceded in death by 1 brother; William T. Hamler; 2 sisters; Bonnie Smith and Jean Kibler; and 1 infant daughter.

There will be no public viewing as she requested but family and friends will be received on Wednesday, February 15, 2017, for a funeral service at the Roseville Church of Christ, 3359 Route 322, Brookville, PA, 15825, beginning at 2:00pm and officiated by Evangelist John Kerr.

She will then be laid to rest at the Roseville – Bethel Cemetery, Union Twp,. Jefferson Co., PA.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the McKinney – d’Argy Funeral Home, ltd, on Main Street in Brookville PA.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Roseville Church of Christ, or to the Heritage House, 4 Sylvania St., Brookville, PA, 15825, or to the American Cancer Society.
