Dorothy Hook

Dorothy Hook, Ph.D. age 85 of Rattlesnake Road Brockport, PA; died on Wednesday August 4, 2021, at Christ the King Manor in Dubois, PA.

Born September 25, 1935, in DuBois, PA; she was the daughter of the late Frank and Kathryn Lazor McGlinsky.

Dorothy married Terrence Hook on November 23, 1957, at St. Catherine of Sienna Catholic Church in DuBois and he survives. Dorothy was a graduate of the Sandy Twp. High School and the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. She obtained three degrees from the Pennsylvania State University with full academic scholarships: a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Science in Architecture and a Ph.D. in Philosophy of Art and Architecture. She also studied Architectural Stained Glass Design in Pittsburgh and Berkeley, California.

She was instrumental in setting up art courses at the DuBois Campus, Penn State and taught there for six years before becoming an Artist-in-Resident for the state of Pennsylvania for 14 years. In this capacity she collaborated with students to design and complete 76 permanent wall murals in sculptured ceramics or painted wood up to 80 feet. She completed 90 residencies in Pennsylvania Public and Parochial Schools.

Dorothy attended National and International Conferences of Interfaith Forum on Religion, Art and Architecture in conjunction with the Architects of America and traveled with a select of IFRAA members to all the Scandinavian countries and Mexico.

She also traveled extensively in France, Italy, Newfoundland and Ireland as well as the Hawaiian Islands. A professional artist, traveler and teacher, Dorothy also gave lectures and seminars in British Columbia, Seattle and Alaska where she also worked as an Artist-on-Board for the Alaska Marine Ferry System for 7 years painting watercolors in every harbor and native village from Prince Rupert, B.C., all the way to Dutch Harbor, Aleutian Islands. Dorothy and Terry drove country to Alaska spending wonderful days camping, boating and travelling for 24 summers into fall.

She won over 80 prestigious awards in juried shows and has had 74 one-woman exhibitions in the United States and Canada. Recognized as an accomplished artist of Alaskan scenes, her work has become well known internationally and widely accepted by the public with over 300 of her original watercolor scenes now being published in collectable post cards, notecards, fine art prints, and two recent Alaskan Sketchbooks on Mountains and Seaside Villages. Dr. Hook was included in the Penn State College of Art and Architecture 50 year Alumni Anniversary Publication of exceptional projects and those graduates who have achieved high levels of success within their respective disciplines. This was in the spring of 2013 of their printed publication showing alumni from all three programs of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Graphic Design.

In addition to her husband Dorothy is survived by two sons: Michael (Missy) Hook of Brockport; Dr. Patrick (Belinda) Hook of Boston MA; one daughter Kathleen Megan Hook of Summit, NJ. She is also survived by 3 grandchildren: Alexandra, Dalton and MacKenzie. She is also survived by a sister, Sandra McGlinsky Petitti of Hazen, PA. There will be no public Visitation. All services for Dorothy will be private at the convenience of her family. Memorial donations may be made to the Mayo Clinic Cancer Research Center in Rochester, Minnesota which helped her survive this devastating disease for an extra fifteen exciting years.
